Lead Gardener & Garden Coordinator

Job Description:

Position Summary:
The Lead Gardener & Garden Coordinator is responsible for the planning, cultivation, and maintenance of all edible gardens, ornamental landscapes, and grounds across the property. This role combines hands-on horticultural expertise with organizational leadership, ensuring that gardens are productive, beautiful, and aligned with the property’s aesthetic and sustainability goals. This includes the management and supervision of 2-3 full-time gardeners.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in horticulture or sustainable agriculture, thrives outdoors, and enjoys collaborating with chefs, hospitality staff, and vendors to create vibrant garden spaces that enhance the visitor experience.

Key Responsibilities:
Garden Management & Production
•  Plan, plant, and maintain diverse crops including vegetables, herbs, fruit trees, and ornamental plants.
•  Create and execute seasonal crop plans in collaboration with culinary and event teams.
•  Harvest, label, and deliver fresh produce while maintaining accurate yield and inventory records.
•  Manage propagation, transplanting, and bed preparation, including soil health monitoring and composting.
•  Oversee irrigation system maintenance and adjustments to ensure efficient water use.

Grounds & Aesthetic Care
•  Coordinate and supervise landscaping vendors to maintain pristine grounds and lawns.
•  Prune, weed, and maintain perennial beds, olive trees, and decorative plantings.
•  Ensure the property consistently reflects a world-class, welcoming appearance.

Coordination & Communication
•  Publish a weekly “fresh sheet” or garden report for internal teams.
•  Collaborate with chefs, educators, and facilities staff to support garden-based events and educational programs.
•  Conduct occasional tours or demonstrations for visitors, students, and community groups.

Leadership & Oversight
•  Supervise full time staff of 2 -3 gardeners in daily garden activities.
•  Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas including tool sheds, greenhouses, and storage spaces.
•  Ensure compliance with sustainability practices, safety procedures, and property standards.
•  Assist with budget creation.

Qualifications:
Required
•  High school diploma or equivalent.
•  Minimum of one (1) year of professional gardening or small-scale farm experience.
•  Working knowledge of plant care, soil management, and irrigation systems.
•  Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
•  Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
•  Valid driver’s license.

Preferred
•  Certification as a Master Gardener or ASHS Horticulturist.
•  Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in horticulture, agriculture, or related field.
•  Experience managing both edible and ornamental landscapes.
•  Familiarity with sustainable, organic, or regenerative growing practices.
•  Experience working within hospitality or culinary environments.
•  Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.

Working Conditions:
•  Must be able to lift 30 lbs. frequently and up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
•  Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
•  Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed during peak seasons.
