The Junior Controller will be joining an ambitious winery at a pivotal moment in its growth journey. This role goes beyond traditional accounting support. It offers the chance to help shape the financial backbone of a business that is operating with a startup mindset and ambitious growth trajectory. The Junior Controller will play a key role in ensuring accuracy, compliance, and financial insight while collaborating closely with the head office accounting team and a third-party accounting partner. This is a full-time, onsite position at the winery in San Martin, CA, and presents an exciting opportunity for a motivated professional who wants to grow with a dynamic, evolving organization.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Assist with preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Perform variance analysis of actuals versus budget/forecast.
- Prepare financial schedules and reports for ownership, auditors, and head office finance.
- Partner with the head office accounting team to ensure alignment of reporting and consolidation requirements.
Accounting Operations
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts.
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
- Support accruals, journal entries, and month-end close.
- Ensure compliance with internal controls and policies.
- Collaborate with the third-party accounting team for additional support and technical accounting expertise.
Costing & Inventory
- Track and reconcile winery production costs (grapes, barrels, bottling, etc.).
- Support costing of wine inventory and calculation of COGS.
- Work closely with operations to reconcile physical inventory and investigate variances.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Assist with the annual budget preparation process.
- Support periodic reforecasts in collaboration with the Director of Finance and head office team.
Audit & Compliance
- Provide documentation and support for internal, external, and head office audits.
- Assist with tax compliance (sales tax, excise tax, property tax).
Other Duties
- Contribute to process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
- Provide ad hoc analysis as requested by finance leadership, head office, or ownership.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 3+ years of progressive accounting or financial analysis experience (prior winery or beverage industry experience strongly preferred, but willing to train the right candidate).
- Strong understanding of GAAP; familiarity with winery-specific cost accounting (production, COGS, inventory) is a plus.
- Proficiency in QuickBooks Enterprise required.
- Advanced Excel skills; exposure to ERP/accounting systems a plus.
- Excellent attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, multi-entity environment.
- Analytical and detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
