Our Southern Willamette Valley winery is seeking a harvest intern to join our production team, with the potential for full-time employment based on performance. The Sweet Cheeks Winery family is an extension of the legacy built by our founder, Dan Smith. We dry-farm 42 acres on our estate located just outside of Eugene, Oregon. Our production team produces between 10,000 - 13,000 cases annually.
The harvest intern works under the direct supervision of the winemaker; however, we work as a team, and this position requires effective collaboration with all production staff.
Harvest is a crucial part of our business; to be successful in this role, an individual must have regular and reliable attendance. Working overtime, when requested by the winemaker, is a condition of employment. This position requires the ability to work various shifts, including weekends, evenings, and early mornings.
We are seeking our ideal candidate to start immediately and remain available to work through the beginning of December.
Harvest Tasks and Essential Functions
The following outlines the essential functions of this position, but does not limit the tasks that may be assigned. To be successful in this role, an individual must be able to perform each essential function to a satisfactory standard.
- Perform routine cellar and harvest duties including, but not limited to: grape receival, crushing, sorting, and pressing.
- Process and analysis of vineyard samples.
- Cleaning and sanitizing equipment, including, but not limited to: crush equipment, hoses, presses, pumps, lines, tanks, barrels, barrel equipment, bins, and around the production space.
- Performing physical labor association with cap management including, but not limited to: pump over and punch downs.
- Executing work orders as assigned
- Ensure timely communication with production team and accurate record keeping.
- Preparing and performing SO2 additions
- Gathering samples for lab analysis
- Performing basic barrel procedures, including, but not limited to, topping, stirring, mainenance, checking analysis.
- Tank to tank transfer/racking.
- Assisting with bottling line, including, but not limited to: glass placement at the beginning of bottling, quality control of labeled wines and ensuring all cases are packed correctly, stacking full case boxes correctly.

- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to work in various temperatures and weather conditions.
- Ability and willingness to work varying shifts.
- Ability to work quickly and adapt to the immediate needs during harvest, while being tidy and efficient.
- Basic knowledge of mathematical equations
- Shows commitment to high standards and passion for learning the duties assigned.
- Ability to follow instructions: follow safety practices and procedures for the operation of cellar and bottling equipment.
- The ability to understand, speak, read and write in English.
Essential Physical Requirements
The physical requirements listed are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions and key responsibilities of this position.
- The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner at all times.
- Frequent operation of winemaking, laboratory, and cellar equipment, as well as computer and other office equipment.
- The ability to sit at a workstation for periods of time.
- The ability to work in the vineyard and cellar
- The ability to use a ladder to successfully complete cap management
- The ability to lift and carry items up to 100 lbs frequently during harvest season
- The ability to stand, walk, climb stairs, bend, lift, twist, pull, push, carry, grasp, reach and stoop as needed.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The ability to smell and taste wine blends for quality
Work Environment
- This position will be in our vineyard, laboratory, cellar, production, and office environments.
- The noise level in the office work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
- Work in the field, especially during bottling and/or harvest may have moderate to heavier noise levels.
- This position may encounter high or low temperatures.
- The work environment can have inclement weather and various outdoor working conditions.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be 21 years of age or older
- Bilingual verbal skills in English and Spanish desirable
- Beverage production experience is preferred
- Experience with forklifts, presses, barrel work or other cellar operations is a plus
- Experience with basic wine chemistry analysis is a plus
