Pride Mountain Vineyards, a family-owned and operated winery perched high atop the Mayacamas Mountains between Napa and Sonoma counties, is looking to add a regular full-time Production Enologist to its winemaking team.
The successful candidate will provide direct support to the Winemaker in all aspects of wine production with a focus on efficiently organizing cellar workflow, data collection and preparations for bottling. The primary goal of this position is to continue to elevate the quality and consistency of all winemaking activities.
Responsibilities:
Production
• Record and ensure timely execution of scheduled wine movements and blends
• Management of empty barrels including inventory, sales and maintenance schedule
• Draft, review, or modify work orders for cap/extraction management, fermentation additions, topping, barrel selections and aging of all wines
• All cellar related work, including harvest operations, barrel movements, racking, blending, filtration and bottling prep
• Ensure all required juice/must additions happen prior to the start of fermentation
Enology
• Pull all samples for tasting and analysis
• Update and execute topping and analysis schedules for wines after harvest
• Daily sampling of all fermentations to ensure a healthy and timely progression to pressing
• Submit all samples to ETS for pre-bottling checks
• Express curiosity about all aspects of winemaking
Bottling
• Ensure that all wines prepped for bottling meet requirements for quality, production and compliance
• Cooperate with the winemaker and shipping/bottling manager to facilitate the ordering, receiving and inventory of packaging components
• Maintain COLA logs and submit label changes to the TTB for approval when required
• Work alongside the winemaking and vineyard teams to supply bottles, label cases and stack pallets
• Pull samples for QC analysis during bottling
Administrative
• Maintain all records in InnoVint including wine movements, barrel inventory, dry goods inventory and bottling supplies
• Support the vineyard team by submitting all vineyard applications to the Napa County Ag Commissioner
• Document and contribute to all experiments to inform winemaking practices
• Collaborate with the winemaker to refine and improve best practices/SOPs for winery operations
Required Education and Professional Experience
• BS in Enology or Fermentation Science or a combination of a related science degree and experience; MS in Enology or Fermentation Science preferred
• Minimum of four vintages of winemaking experience
• International experience and a year or more of full-time wine production experience preferred
• Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel and Outlook required; experience with InnoVint preferred
General Requirements
• Authorization to work in the US
• Ability to clearly comprehend directions written and verbally expressed in English
• Ability to write clearly and correspond professionally in English
• Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
Physical Requirements
• Ability to accurately discern wine characteristics and flaws when tasting and smelling
• Ability to perform all physical requirements of position including standing for extended periods of time, kneeling, stooping, climbing and lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling weights of up to 50 pounds
• Ability to regularly walk over rough or uneven ground for extended periods and distances
• Ability to tolerate prolonged exposure to outside elements including hot, cold, wet and damp conditions
• Ability to sit for prolonged periods and have sufficient hand, wrist and finger dexterity to operate a mouse and keyboard
• Visual acuity: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
• Ability to speak audibly and hear clearly at normal conversational levels
