The Enologist plays a substantial role in elevating the quality of our wines through meticulous tracking and monitoring from the cellar and the laboratory. The Enologist takes charge of bench trials and in-house experiments that can be implemented into the cellar to continuously improve the brand and aid in the company’s objectives vintage after vintage. This role requires experience and understanding of the best lab and cellar practices, organoleptic evaluations of wines, and admin in order to communicate across the entire winemaking production team.

General Responsibilities:
-Implement wine and brand style objectives
-Work Order Generation/Entry
-Set up trials and tastings as directed
-Management and oversight of the Lab
-Maintain fully operational lab:
-Clean workspace
-Equipment maintenance
-Schedule Equipment PMs
-Oversee and integrate lab results to Vintrace
-Order lab supplies/reagents
-Run routine analysis
-Vintrace proficiency
-Understand winemaking and laboratory processes
-Ability to operate within a budget
-Recommend/instigate improved lab procedures/practices
-Participate in tastings regarding wine style establishment
-Ensure wines meet quality standards
-Identify wine quality concerns and alert winemaking team
-Pull, prep, and send bulk wine samples
-Generate PO’s and maintain accurate inventory of additives
-Continuously improve QA/QC program
-Develop and Maintain SOPs
-Collaborate with Cellar Master to improve wine quality and systems
-Monitor all wines through various stages of fermentation and elevage
-Take corrective action on wines needing intervention
-Record-keeping
Cellar Responsibilities:
Assist with cellar work as needed, including:
-Topping
-Additions
-Forklift
-Taking charge of any unique wine treatments with specific protocols
Bottling:
-Ensure all bottling wines are in spec and ready for packaging
-Bottling QC analysis
-Post-crossflow additions made in sync with bottling schedule
-Communicate effectively with cellar crew and Bottling Supervisor
-Bottling Reports
Harvest Responsibilities:
-Data: WO generation and entry
-Maintain Vintrace accuracy/upkeep
-Hiring Harvest Interns
-Training - especially lab intern, flotation, additions, and inoculations
-Vineyard sample processing QC
-Fermentation analysis and protocol
-Flotation
-Analysis
-Pectin Testing
-Treatments
-Trials
-Managing Additions team
-R&D harvest trials
-Ability to work long hours, 6 days a week during peak season
Winery Culture Responsibilities:
-Understand and promote a safe work culture/environment
-Help to create an environment for learning and development of coworkers
-Represent winery at industry events
-Support winery at consumer/trade fairs and other winemaking related events
Minimum Qualifications:
-Degree in Enology, Microbiology, Chemistry, or Food Science (preferred not required)
-Two years of wine production/lab experience
-Basic knowledge of winemaking techniques and laboratory analytical methods
-Vintrace experience (highly preferred)
-Computer proficiency in Excel, Word, Google Sheets, Google Docs
-Good organizational and planning skills
-Some managerial experience (preferred but not required)
-Strong communication skills
-High attention to detail
-Forklift experience (preferred but not required)
-Ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently
-Willingness to work long hours when required
-At least 21 years old
-Must have a valid driver’s license and a reliable form of transportation
Physical Requirements:
-Ability to work in adverse weather conditions
-Ability to lift 50 lbs/able to sit or stand for extended periods
-Comfort with heights/ladders
