Production Winemaker

Job Description:

Be a member of the Production team that supports the company in all aspects of production, winemaking, and efficiency both at Shannon Wine Company in Nice and Steele Winery in Kelseyville. Must be well-versed in organizing production logistics, such as ordering supplies, scheduling of work orders and materials and logistics of trucking. Responsible for tactical planning and execution of efficiency improvement.

Essential Functions
•  Assist the Director of Winemaking and Production and oversee all aspects of winemaking
•  Be instrumental in the decision-making process for wine style evolution.
•  Makes recommendations to improve wine quality
•  Maintains product quality and addresses supply and demand fluctuations to meet product volume objectives.
•  Assists with harvest timing and picking decisions ensuring optimum grape quality for winemaking objectives and goals
•  Develops wine blends and new wines in order to support short and long term winemaking goals and objectives
•  Assists with all winemaking matters, ensures appropriate record keeping for legal compliance with federal, state and locals regulations relating to winemaking activities.
•  Oversees quality assurance processes and procedures to reflect winemaking procedures
•  Communicates directly with the Director of Winemaking on all plans, procedures and winemaking activities
•  Works with Winemaking team to make recommendations on barrel and/or wood additives program and purchases
•  Maintaining and updating company shared data on all aspects of operations including:
-Fermentation management
-Wine making tasks including racking, pumping, filtering and blending of wines
-Managing wines aging in cooperage and tanks
-Wine chemical analysis including sensory analysis
-Other duties as they relate to the production and record keeping of our wines
•  Participates in marketing and public relations activities as necessary
•  Involved in viticultural practices to ensure quality and achieve winemaking goals
•  Monitor production plans and update or make changes as they occur
•  Maintain contact with custom crush and storage facilities to ensure company standards are maintained and quality is not compromised.

Qualifications & Experience
•  Bachelor's Degree (B.S.) or Equivalent
•  Two to four years of winemaking and related experience.
•  Bilingual English/ Spanish Desired
•  Commitment to Excellence and high standards
•  Excellent written and oral communication skills
•  Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; able to manage priorities and workflow
•  Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm
•  Having a positive attitude to contribute to all aspects of our business
•  Attention to detail
•  Proficient use of MS Office
•  Ability to deal with a diversity of individuals at all organizational levels
•  Working knowledge of data collection, data analysis, evaluation, and scientific method

Working conditions
This is an exempt salary, full time position. There will be times when there will be longer days/weeks required, especially during bottling and grape crush. Schedule is very dependent on the time of year and demands of our clients. Exposure to indoor/outdoor environments; exposure to wet or humid conditions. Exposure to inclement seasonal weather, summer heat, cold weather, rain. Exposure to high noise levels while working with cellar operation. Exposure to chemicals and machinery required to process wine. Heavy, physical work (climbing into tanks, pulling hoses, climbing high ladders, et.).

Physical requirements
Good vision, hearing, noise levels can be moderate to loud. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and under pressure. Frequent walking, bending, stooping and twisting in the performance of various tasks in the warehouse environment. Must be able to repeatedly lift and carry weights up to 60 pounds at varying frequencies and up to 5,000 pounds with equipment.
