About the Role:
We are a growing direct-to-consumer wine e-commerce retailer headquartered in the heart of Napa Valley. As we expand our national reach, we are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Compliance Accountant to join our finance team. This hybrid role uniquely blends state-by-state regulatory compliance with hands-on general accounting responsibilities, making it an ideal opportunity for a candidate who thrives in a dynamic, regulated industry.
This position plays a critical role in ensuring our business operates within the complex patchwork of U.S. alcohol beverage laws, while also supporting the day-to-day financial operations of the company.
Key Responsibilities:
Regulatory Compliance (approx. 50%):
Research, prepare, and submit direct-to-consumer (DtC) wine shipping compliance filings across all licensed U.S. states, including monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and excise tax reports.
Monitor and maintain active shipping licenses, direct shipper permits, and retailer licenses across all applicable states, managing renewal calendars to avoid lapses.
Track changes in state alcohol beverage control (ABC) regulations, shipping laws, and tax requirements, and update internal compliance procedures accordingly.
Coordinate with the company's third-party compliance counsel and state regulators as needed to resolve filing questions or licensing issues.
Maintain accurate records of all compliance filings, correspondence, and license documentation in the company's compliance management system.
Partner with the fulfillment and technology teams to ensure order management systems accurately capture data required for state reporting (e.g., volume, recipient age verification, shipping addresses).
Assist in preparing for and responding to state audits or regulatory inquiries.
General Accounting (approx. 50%):
Perform month-end close activities including journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis.
Reconcile bank accounts, credit card statements, and accounts payable/receivable ledgers on a regular basis.
Support accounts payable processing, including vendor invoice review, coding, and payment runs.
Assist with preparation of monthly financial statements and management reporting packages.
Help maintain fixed asset schedules and prepaid expense amortization.
Support the annual financial audit by preparing supporting schedules and responding to auditor requests.
Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and ad hoc financial analysis as needed.
Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
2–5 years of accounting experience, with exposure to regulatory or compliance functions preferred.
Strong understanding of general accounting principles (GAAP) and month-end close processes.
High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar ERP).
Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple concurrent deadlines.
Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of compliance calendars and filing obligations.
Preferred:
Experience in wine, spirits, beer, or another licensed beverage alcohol business.
Familiarity with direct-to-consumer (DtC) wine shipping compliance and state ABC regulations.
Experience with compliance management platforms (e.g., ShipCompliant / Sovos).
Experience working in an e-commerce or high-growth retail environment.
