Role Summary
Manager-level role accountable for accurate payroll and benefits administration, regulatory compliance, and disciplined execution in a multi-department, multi-entity environment. Requires ownership of outcomes, strong technical fundamentals, and consistent follow-through.

Core Responsibilities
Payroll Management
• Manage full-cycle payroll for hourly and salaried employees
• Maintain accurate setup of pay codes, earnings, deductions, taxes, garnishments, and benefit integrations
• Audit payroll prior to each processing and resolve discrepancies
• Ensure compliance with California wage/hour laws, meal/rest requirements, overtime, and final pay rules
• Reconcile payroll registers to general ledger and support month-end close
• Manage year-end processes including W-2s, audits, and reconciliations
Benefits Administration
• Manage benefit enrollments, life events, terminations, COBRA, and eligibility
• Reconcile carrier invoices against payroll deductions
• Coordinate with brokers and vendors to resolve discrepancies
• Maintain accurate benefit configurations within payroll/HRIS systems
• Execute annual open enrollment with accuracy and timeliness
Compliance & Controls
• Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations
• Follow and enforce internal controls related to payroll processing
• Maintain documentation and audit trails
• Identify process gaps and implement corrections
Systems & Process
• Operate within modern payroll and HRIS platforms
• Maintain data integrity across payroll, benefits, and accounting systems
• Develop and maintain SOPs for payroll and benefits processes
• Reduce manual work and improve efficiency where appropriate

• Communicate issues clearly and early
• Accept accountability and correct errors without deflection

Required Experience & Capability
• 4–6 years of payroll and/or benefits administration experience
• Strong working knowledge of California payroll law
• Experience supporting both hourly and salaried populations
• Demonstrated attention to detail and reconciliation capability
• Experience with systems such as Paylocity, ADP, Paycom, UKG, or similar
• Solid Excel skills
• Consistent reliability and follow-through
