Unsworth Vineyards is a vineyard, winery, hospitality and dining experience located at the cross roads of Mill Bay, Cobble Hill and Shawnigan Lake in the idyllic southern Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island, BC. The Cowichan Valley and Vancouver Island are up and coming wine regions with unique and evolving identities. We are leaders in bringing local Vancouver Island food and wine culture to BC and beyond. Established in 2009 by the Turyk family, the company values versatility, consistency and innovation. We make a diverse range of wines with an emphasis on cool-climate styles such as sparkling, acid-driven whites and delicate Pinot Noir.
We are a small (yet mighty), young (yet knowledgeable) team of 3 looking to fill the full-time position of Cellar Hand to round out our quartet. We work hard but also make sure to enjoy the fruits of our labour and appreciate the beautiful place we get to call our office. We strive for continuous incremental improvement through our senses, learning from our neighbours as well as industry experts, experimentation, data-collection, questioning why and how we do things and team discussions. We value clear and kind communication.
Job Requirements and Description
Working directly with the winemaker, the successful candidate will be excited at the opportunity to learn and hone their cellar skills. They will take pride in all that they do from scrubbing tanks to assisting with blending trials. To be sure, there will be lots of cleaning. They will be passionate and curious about wine and winemaking. They will be reliable, have excellent attention to detail and have a great work ethic. They will work safely and with care for the equipment and tools.
While the cellar will be the primary focus of this role, as a small team, there is never an attitude of “not my job”. So there will be opportunities to work in the vineyard and possibly other areas of the company.
Especially during harvest, the successful candidate will be required to work long hours and without days off during the peak period (typically 2-3 weeks). They will assist in training and supervising a small team of seasonal vintage cellar hands during the harvest period.
Outside of the harvest period, the Cellar Hand will be involved in all aspects of winemaking. Of particular note is the opportunity to learn and operate our Charmat sparkling wine program.
This is a growth opportunity for someone early in their winemaking career. For the right person, there may be opportunities for this position to grow into a Cellar Master or Assistant Winemaker role.
The following qualifications are not required but will be looked upon favourably:
• Harvest and/or cellar experience including experience operating a forklift
• Vineyard experience
• Oenology and/or Viticulture education
