Accounting & HR Specialist

Gary Farrell Winery

Healdsburg, CA

Apply

Job Description:

Most jobs make you pick a lane: the numbers or the people. This one offers both.

For over forty years, Gary Farrell Winery has explored the Russian River Valley in pursuit of exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Behind every bottle is a small team built on collaboration, commitment and trust, and we’re looking for the person who helps keep it that way.

As our Accounting & HR Specialist, you’ll be who colleagues turn to with questions about their paycheck, benefits or the budget, and who leadership counts on to get it right. You’ll own day-to-day accounting and run payroll and HR. You’ll report to our Controller and work closely with our General Manager, with a real seat at the table.

If you’ve been the go-to person at a small business, love a clean reconciliation as much as a smooth onboarding, and get excited about systems and processes, this role was written for you.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
•  Own full-cycle accounting, including payables, receivables, journal entries, bank reconciliations and cash reporting
•  Support month-end close and prepare accurate financial statements and management reports leaders actually use
•  Support year-end close and audits, and help the winemaking team through harvest accounting
•  Find better ways to work: spot what can be simplified, automated or tightened, and make it happen
•  Run payroll semi-monthly and keep our HRIS accurate, and lead the way in getting more out of the system
•  Be the primary point of contact for HR, benefits and employee relations questions, using sound judgment about what to handle and what to bring to the General Manager
•  Administer benefits programs, partnering with brokers and vendors so employees get what they need
•  Lead recruiting, onboarding and offboarding so every new hire has a great first day and every departure is handled with care
•  Partner with leadership and legal counsel on policies, safety training and California employment compliance
•  Keep the office running smoothly for the whole team

THE RHYTHM OF THE ROLE
Your week generally follows business hours, Monday through Friday, with the occasional evening, weekend or holiday. (Yup, payroll is inconvenient sometimes.) We value consistency and are open to discussing what works for you, like an earlier start and finish to overlap with our Controller on Central time.

The first half of each month is accounting-forward: close, reconciliations and reporting have firm deadlines and take priority. After close, the calendar opens for deeper HR work like recruiting, benefits, policy and training.

That doesn’t make HR the side job. Employees don’t wait for the close, and payroll runs twice a month, every month. The right person protects financial deadlines while staying fully present for the team.

WHO YOU ARE
•  You’re the person people trust. You handle confidential information with discretion, and colleagues feel comfortable coming to you
•  You love variety. A morning on reconciliations and an afternoon on open enrollment sounds like a good day
•  You take ownership. When something’s off, you dig in, fix it and let the right people know
•  You know when to decide and when to ask. You use good judgment, and when you need guidance or training, you speak up early, knowing leadership will support you
•  You want your work to matter. You’d rather be essential to a small, close-knit team than one of many in a large department

WHAT YOU BRING
•  At least 2 years of progressive HR experience, plus a strong foundation in general ledger accounting, AP/AR and financial statements. The ideal candidate is well-rounded in both HR and accounting, but please still apply if your experience is stronger in one area than the other
•  Experience carrying significant responsibility on your own in a small business
•  Strong attention to detail and a knack for spotting discrepancies before they become problems
•  Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, SUMIF) and ERP experience; Navision or Business Central a plus
•  HRIS and payroll experience; Paylocity a plus
•  Familiarity with Commerce7, Tock or similar winery DTC systems is a bonus
•  A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, HR or business preferred

WHY GARY FARRELL
•  Be essential, not interchangeable. Your work is visible and your voice matters
•  See how the business really runs, from harvest to the P&L
•  Join a people-first culture rooted in curiosity, commitment and delight, named one of the North Bay Business Journal’s “Best Places to Work” two years running
•  Work with an admired brand: Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with deep heritage and a loyal following

COMPENSATION & LOCATION
•  Salary: $72,500–$90,000 plus discretionary bonus potential
•  Competitive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, paid time off (generous vacation, sick time and holidays), 401(k) with company contribution, and more
•  Full-time, onsite role based in Healdsburg, CA. There's some flexibility to work remotely on occasion, but onsite presence is a core part of the job

The salary range reflects the company's good-faith estimate of what we reasonably expect to pay for this position upon hire. Placement within the range depends on experience and qualifications, and compensation growth opportunities may be available based on performance within the role.
