Summary
The Vineyard/Maintenance Mechanic will work closely with the Vice President of Polyculture to perform repair and maintenance of equipment primarily used for vineyard use and landscaping for 150 planted acres on our 484-acre estate in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. The position necessitates coordinating activities with the facilities team, equipment operators/ ranch hands, animals coordinators, and vineyard labor teams to care for our vineyards, orchards, gardens and oak savanna. The successful candidate will always put safety first, while paying careful attention to detail and taking personal responsibility for their work. We seek an individual capable of operating many different tractors and implements with confidence and maintaining all items in safe, operating condition. They will perform a real fix rather than a band-aid solution, can pivot when a temporary solution is necessary and will meticulously return to bandaged items for full repair once the immediate need has passed. Additionally, this individual should be sustainability-minded, always working to reduce inputs/energy use while maintaining detailed records. Ideally, they will be capable of working independently and as part of a collaborative team that supports one another and takes pride in a job well done. Experience in organic, biodynamic and regenerative agriculture is desired. This position is Full Time and Permanent, wages and benefits are competitive.
Primary Responsibilities
´ Perform routine maintenance of all vineyard machinery including but not limited to RTVs, vehicles, specialized narrow tractors (wheeled, tracks & half-tracks), prepruners, deleafters, mowers, cultivators, compost spreaders, undervine mechanical weeders, hedgers, harvest lights, loaders, and sprayers.
´ Diagnose, repair and maintain tractors, implements, pumps, pump engines and other farm equipment
´ Participate in the construction and maintenance of various farm facilities
´ Fruit and equipment hauling for repair, maintenance, and for support of harvest activities
´ Exercise good judgment in cases of emergencies
´ Be an active participant in creating a culture of safety to ensure a safe work environment for all staff and visitors.
´ Track materials usage and needs and ensure supplies are acquired in a timely manner to facilitate work flow
´ Maintain excellent records of work activities, including the use of software/technology systems such as AgCode
´ Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all those contacted in the course of work
´ Support strong communication between in-house labor, contract labor, fruit buyers, winemaking team, animal husbandry and leadership.
´ Additional responsibilities may include tractor work (this individual should be capable of operating all equipment on which they work), winery work such as sanitation, sorting fruit and waxing or other tasks that provide support outside of the vineyard department, the position is year round but primary responsibilities are seasonal in nature.
Qualifications
´ Ability to work in a bilingual environment, Spanish and English language skills preferred
´ Commitment to and understanding of safe work procedures, particularly lock-out tag-out, and safety elements required for legally compliant operation of tools, tractors, and vehicles
´ Strong understanding of hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems
´ Five years of relevant equipment repair/maintenance experience, preferably with vineyard/orchard machinery
´ Strong problem solving and creative skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment
´ High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation
´ Willingness to work collaboratively to achieve goals, including reporting incidents and equipment failures promptly to avoid unsafe operation
´ Ability to read service manuals, schematics and technical drawings
´ Confidence using trailer, tie down equipment and performing safe equipment and fruit transportation
´ Fluency with operational characteristics, services and activities of biodynamic vineyards
´ Experience with LIVE, Organic, Biodynamic, or other vineyard certifications
´ Strong communication skills
´ Willingness to adapt schedule to seasonal conditions/work flow. This includes all hours of the day and variable conditions (night harvest, dust, rain, etc…)
´ Must carry ODA pesticide license or be capable of obtaining
´ Must be at least 21 years of age
´ Must be able to safely lift 40 lbs. and stand and walk for long periods of time
´ Must hold a valid Oregon DL with clean record, (be insurable).
´ Will successfully submit to a basic background check
Physical Requirements
´ Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks such as bending, standing, and moving for extended periods of time.
´ Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Working Conditions
Working conditions include office environment, processing facility, vineyard, garden, shop, headlands and woodlands.
