Summary:

The Assistant Viticulturist will work closely with the Vice President of Polyculture, and select members of their team, in creating, curating, and caring for all agricultural systems across a 484-acre property in Oregon’s Eola-Amity Hills. The property includes ~150 acres of wine grapes, over eighty acres of native oaks and ample headlands for regenerative agriculture projects. This role is responsible for overseeing the daily operation of our integrated vineyard, orchard, gardens and animals programs.

The successful candidate will always put safety first, maintain attention to detail, and take personal responsibility for their work. In addition, they will demonstrate a strong understanding of viticultural practices, vineyard cultural practices, integrated pest management, irrigation, and plant nutrition along with an awareness of the limits of their knowledge and a commitment to lifelong learning.

They will serve as the safety coordinator for the farm, and oversee the daily tasks performed by both our in-house farming team and outside vineyard management to support the execution of farm plans.

To achieve the above, the Assistant Viticulturist must be a self-motivated individual who thrives in both independent and dynamic working environments. They must be able to effectively communicate with and direct the work of Spanish-speaking team members while supporting the long-term vision for the property.


Primary Responsibilities:
´ Exercise sound judgment in emergency situations
´ Supervise and ensure proper execution of vineyard work
´ Participate in quality control and monitor work efficiency
´ Coordinate with operators, crew leaders, laborers and animal husbandry team to ensure safety for all and prevent pesticide exposure to our animals, staff and guests
´ Direct the work of seasonal employees and other assigned team members
´ Maintain data capture processes for accurate timing, data collection, record keeping, and rapid reporting
´ Update seasonal, annual and historical reports
´ Communicate clearly and concisely, translating the farm plan into sequenced, resourced weekly schedules and driving the work to completion
´ Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders
´ Oversee spray activities, including setup, breakdown, work order close-out, and calibration of sprayer output and tractor ground speed.


Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience:
´ Spanish and English language skills required
´ Advanced computer skills including Microsoft platform with high level of confidence in Excel
´ Experience with, or ability to learn multiple software applications including but not limited to AgCode, Ramp, Rippling, Monday, and various iPad or phone apps.
´ Experience with regenerative, biodynamic and organic farming desired
´ Understanding or desire to learn about integrated vineyard and animal husbandry programs
´ Commitment to and understanding of safe work procedures
´ College degree in viticulture or related field, three years of relevant vineyard experience, or combination of both
´ Outstanding organizational ability with strong problem solving skills and ability to exercise sound judgement.
´ High level of integrity with a solid sense of urgency and results-orientation
´ Willingness to step outside job description to support other departments within our small business at need including but not limited to winery, hospitality, culinary, animal care
´ Positive, solutions-oriented mindset, contributing to a culture of trust, communication, and collaboration
´ Minimum age of 21
´ Ability to lift 40 lbs and stand or walk for extended periods
´ Valid driver’s license; ability to safely operate and oversee operation of tractors, UTVs, and spray equipment



Levels of Effort:
70% Vineyard
20% Non-Vineyard/Other Tasks
10% Record Keeping


Working Conditions:
Working conditions include outdoor farm and vineyard work, as well as time spent in the processing facility, cellar, hospitality areas, kitchen and office. Seasonal shifts in hours/responsibilities include night work and long hours during harvest time (Sept-Oct) and potentially also during frost season. Animals require year-round daily care, but the majority of work occurs during a standard work week. Regular shift may include occasional weekends to support staff vacations and sick leave, or to participate in occasional customer-facing events.
