Peay Vineyards is a first-generation, family winery with a 53-acre certified organic vineyard located on the far West Sonoma Coast and a winery located in Cloverdale, California. Peay was founded in 1996 by brothers Nick and Andy Peay, and winemaker, Vanessa Wong.
We seek a highly-motivated individual to handle all aspects of the direct sales channel at Peay, as described below. This is a full-time position with salary, commission, bonus, and benefits with specifics below and to be discussed during the interview process.
The ideal candidate has experience in direct wine sales, significant wine knowledge, a hospitality background, and a strong capability to communicate in verbal and written form. Though you will work with Andy and the rest of the Peay team from time to time, this is a fairly independent position with significant autonomy. You must be self-motivated and disciplined. You will also need to be flexible and adaptable when you are representing Peay in the market. Often, you will need to adjust your schedule, accommodate last-minute requests, and work non-traditional hours - evenings and long days. Additionally, you are a Peay Brand Ambassador, and at times may be asked to handle DTC events, in-home tastings, and wholesale appointments within the same trip. You should be comfortable shifting seamlessly between conversations with casual wine consumers, club members, seasoned sommeliers, and professional buyers.
It is essential that you live in northern California, ideally close to the winery in Cloverdale, as you will meet clients at the winery and vineyard. This will also allow you to take part in blending trials, harvest activities, Open Houses, and other hospitality that will deepen your identity with what we are doing at Peay. In every respect, we want you to become familiar with our winery and to feel a part of the family. There is an office available to you at the winery, as well. Your responsibilities will include the following:
Market Visits/In-Home Receptions (~45% of time):
The direct channel is an integral sales channel for Peay Vineyards. In an increasingly competitive marketplace with filtered media, it is essential for us to reach prospective and current customers, in person, so there will be travel. You will develop and host in-home or office tastings/receptions located around the country with current and prospective mailing list customers. On average, we anticipate you will take two trips per month lasting 2-4 days for 6-7 months of the year. You will handle all aspects of planning your market visits, including travel logistics.
Host Winery and Vineyard Tastings (~30% of time):
You will host intimate, private tastings for prospective and current mailing list customers, mainly at the winery in Cloverdale, but also at the vineyard on the coast. You will be the main, but not the only, person conducting tastings for Peay and will manage all consumer tasting appointments with the wine grower Nick Peay at the vineyard and the assistant winemaker Neely Ashley at the winery.
Club Communication & Customer Service (~20% of time):
You will perform various research using our internal mailing list to offer current customers opportunities to engage with Peay. Additionally, you will manage communications with customers in the direct sales channel including the tracking of shipments, order changes, and other activities related to selling through the direct channel. It is ideal if you are able to use or feel comfortable learning how to use various software products, including: CRM products (we use Figure, currently), Microsoft products (especially Excel), mass mailing software (we use Campaign Monitor), Canva or other design software, and AI products (Claude and/or ChatGPT).
Inventory Management (~5% of time):
You will pull and arrange the movement of library wines from our cellar to our shipping warehouse for orders made in the direct channel. This will also include assisting with the annual physical inventory of our library.
Starting Base Salary: $100,000 base salary
Commission: 10% of direct sales from tastings
Bonus: Annual, year-end, if goals achieved
Healthcare: 50% Company paid
