Strategic Objective:
Krause Family Cellars produces approximately 12,000 cases per year for our two brands (Cinder Winery & Laissez Faire Wine Co) plus a small amount of “custom crush” wine. We work closely with seven local vineyards in our Snake River Valley and craft over 20 unique wines each year.
In this position the Winemaker is accountable for the smooth, efficient, and profitable operation of the Winemaking Department of Krause Family Cellars, LLC. The Winemaker supervises the cellar, lab, and winemaking team. This role requires the ability to operate with a high level of independence and leadership. The Winemaker will be accountable for leading, managing, and holding accountable a team of employees that execute all aspects of the winery operations. The Winemaker will be relied upon to run the day to day operations of the wine production team with minimal supervision. Therefore high professional standards, open and honest communication plus strong leadership skills are essential for this position.

Core Responsibilities:
Winemaking:
Act as the primary winemaking department leader, ensuring production aligns with the Core Values of the winery by working closely with Head Winemaker/Owner.
Hire and lead a team of employees (Cellar Hands, Bottling Crew, Harvest Crew) to execute all winemaking.
Develop and execute winemaking schedules and work orders efficiently.
Accountable for the accurate tracking of wine inventory, chemistry status, winemaking stages, and production metrics through spreadsheets and other collaborative tools.
Conduct blending and finishing trials, independently or with the Owner, to refine winemaking processes and styles.
Accountable for the evaluation of all barrels, tanks, and storage vessels for quality prior to blending or usage.
Accountable for the supply/inventory/ordering of all chemicals, winemaking supplies, bottling supplies to ensure smooth operation while keeping down costs.
Ensure that routine laboratory analysis is completed by your team, including TA, pH, and SO2 testing, ensuring consistency and accuracy.
Ensure quality control steps are followed during bottling and all other winery activities.
Occasionally stepping in for the Head Winemaker in evaluating vineyard quality and providing feedback on harvest timing, grape condition, and yield estimates.
Adhere to annual budgets including winemaking team wages, winery supplies, maintenance, utilities, lab supply and lab analysis and meet those budgets.
Introduce novel and current wine industry standards in equipment and technologies where applicable.
Team Leadership and Training:
Direct oversight of all winemaking and cellar personnel.
Foster a culture of safety, overseeing the safe operation of equipment and proper chemical handling & training team on 6S manufacturing principles.
Foster a culture of accountability and teamwork, using Entrepreneurs Operating System (EOS) practices to ensure clear communication of expectations and standards to the production team.
Perform performance reviews (as laid out by EOS) to establish growth plans and achieve professional development benchmarks by personnel.
Cooperate with members of the Leadership Team to enhance the sales team's ability to promote sales through event coordination, monitoring wine supply, enabling winery tours and other promotional events that take place at the winery.
Creative Contributions and Wine Portfolio Development:
Contribute to stylistic goal-setting and innovation in wine development, including introducing new practices or ideas to enhance the winery’s portfolio.
Contribute to safety culture where appropriate by introducing systems and practices that will protect worker safety and wine quality.
Identify areas of inefficiency that will drive down costs while increasing employee satisfaction.
Public and Industry Engagement:
Represent Cinder at occasional Wine Club events, tours, tastings, and press or trade opportunities to enhance the winery’s public image.
Serve as a knowledgeable and approachable resource for the sales team, customers, trade professionals, and industry partners.
Facility Operations:
Work with vendors to execute objectives not able to be handled in-house (maintenance of HVAC, electrical, fire, safety, and security, etc).
Ability to do basic troubleshooting on winemaking/facility equipment and systems, analyze related technical issues and resolve equipment down time issues through personal ability/knowledge and/or vendor outsourcing in a timely manner.
Skills and Competencies:
Winemaking:
A complete understanding of fermentation & wine aging/care principles and how they apply to red and white wine production, including primary and secondary fermentation, all line/tank/barrel and facility cleaning protocols, maceration and extraction, yeast preparations, daily monitoring, press decisions, blending, bottling process and barrel care.
Ability to operate press, destemmer/crusher and hopper.
A complete mastery of forklift operation, care and safety.
Ability to learn and master operation of the glycol system, bottling line and cross-flow filter.
Must have a track record of accurate and timely record keeping.
Leadership Skills:
Must be able to lead direct reports to create a culture of accountability, excellence, safety, and fun.
Must be able to learn and implement 6S manufacturing principles.
