POSITION
The Cellar Tech will be involved in all aspects of routine and seasonal wine production throughout the year, from harvest through bottling, while taking a lead role in barrel operations and maintenance. This position supports cellar and winemaking activities through routine cellar work, barrel program oversight, sample collection for analysis, accurate execution of work orders and additions, and the safe operation of all cellar equipment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead and perform day-to-day barrel operations including filling, topping, stirring, additions, racking, barrel preparation, and general barrel maintenance.
• Operate and monitor advanced cellar equipment, including crossflow filtration systems and other wine processing equipment, in a safe and efficient manner.
• Assist with filtration, blending, fining, and other wine processing activities as assigned.
• Pull representative tank and barrel samples for analysis, tasting, or client requests, and ensure samples are properly identified, handled, and delivered.
• Read, follow, and complete work orders accurately, including execution of wine additions, cellar operations, and related documentation.
• Coordinate and execute wine movements including rackings, barrel-to-tank transfers, tank-to-tank transfers, and other production movements using pumps, hoses, and standard cellar equipment.
• Maintain topping, barrel maintenance, and sampling schedules to support wine quality, inventory accuracy, and production timelines.
• Clean, sanitize, and maintain tanks, barrels, hoses, pumps, filters, and other cellar equipment in accordance with cellar, safety, and food-grade sanitation procedures.
• Support bottling operations as needed, including sanitation, setup, dry goods handling, line support, and finished goods organization.
• Participate in harvest operations including fruit processing, dig-outs, sorting, punch-downs, pump-overs, press work, and general crush support.
• Monitor barrel and cellar conditions, identify quality, equipment, or safety concerns, and communicate issues promptly to supervisors.
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe cellar, crush pad, barrel room, and production work areas.
• Help train and guide less experienced cellar staff in proper cellar practices, barrel procedures, sanitation, and safe equipment operation.
• Perform other cellar and production duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Previous winery, cellar, or related production experience required
• Working knowledge of cellar sanitation, wine movements, barrel operations, filtration, and safe chemical handling required.
• Experience operating cellar equipment such as pumps, crossflow filters, forklifts, and other production equipment required
• Ability to read, interpret, and accurately execute written and verbal work orders with strong attention to detail and recordkeeping.
• Ability to pull representative wine samples and handle them accurately for analysis, tasting, and client requests.
• Ability to prioritize work, operate independently, and take initiative while contributing positively to a team-oriented winery environment.
• Ability to help train or guide less experienced cellar staff in proper cellar procedures, sanitation, and safe equipment use preferred.
• Valid driver’s license preferred.
• Bilingual English/Spanish skills are a plus.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
• Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
• Able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work on concrete floors for extended periods.
• Able to work safely in hot, cold, wet, humid, and noisy indoor/outdoor environments.
• Able to work around cellar chemicals, moving equipment, hoses, and production machinery.
• Able to work overtime, weekends, and extended shifts during harvest, bottling, and other peak production periods.
Compensation
$21 – $24/hour, depending on experience
Eligible for overtime
