Wine on Piedmont

Oakland, CA

Job Description:

About Us:
Wine on Piedmont offers a thoughtful selection of wine, beer and spirits–with a focus on small, independent producers. As the nation’s first Certified Green Wine & Spirits retailer, we pride ourselves on featuring makers who share our values. Since opening in 2009, we’ve been serving Piedmont Avenue and beyond.

We believe that wine should be - above all - accessible and enjoyable, though never dumbed down. Through our friendly and knowledgeable staff, wine tastings, newsletters, and wine clubs, we strive to keep our community of wine lovers delighted, informed and coming back for more.

Opportunity:
Ready to help a small, neighborhood business function more efficiently, grow and thrive? Wine on Piedmont is seeking a full-time Assistant Store Manager (36-40 hours per week) to join our small, but mighty team as soon as May 2026. But we’re willing to take the time to find the perfect match for this critical position. As the only other full time employee, the Assistant Store Manager (ASM) will serve as the owner’s right hand, supporting her in supervising - and improving - day-to-day operations, managing our three wine clubs and driving sales and profitability. This is your chance to put your expertise, ideas and initiative to work in a way that will directly and meaningfully impact both our amazing community and our bottom line. Must be available to work evenings and some weekends.

About You:
You're a highly independent problem-solver who takes initiative; you’re comfortable making suggestions to, and sometimes even challenging, owner.
You’re very knowledgeable and passionate about wine & spirits with a constant desire to learn more.
You’re trustworthy, kind, reliable and have a track record of delivering service that keeps customers coming back again and again.
You communicate clearly and in a timely manner with customers and team members; you follow up and follow through.
You’re highly organized and enjoy implementing repeatable processes that save time and simplify complex workflows.
You have previous retail, service, hospitality and/or small business management experience.
While this is by no means a high stress job, you can hustle and prioritize effectively when the situation calls for it.
Key Responsibilities:

Cultivate trusted relationships with current and prospective customers through kindness, understanding and savvy recommendations.
Act as the Manager on Duty (MOD) in the owner's absence helping other staff members prioritize and problem solve.
Audit stock of all inventory and non-inventory (ie office supplies) items regularly; track inventory levels and work with owner to keep critical items in stock.
Serve customers at wine bar and select rotating features and flights.
Work with owner to create and document standard operating procedures for the shop; assist in training staff.
Partner with owner - and propose your own - special projects focused on improving customer experience in-store and online, driving sales, and protecting profitability.
Taste extensively with the owner and team; assist in buying decisions.
Ensure that store is clean (all of us, owner included, regularly mop the floors) and that all items are displayed in an organized, visually appealing manner in store and online; make sure store signage is visible and up-to-date
Take turns with other team members planning and hosting events including weekly Friday night tastings
Write and update product descriptions for website and event tasting notes

Initially assist owner, but eventually manage independently:
Manage Wine on Piedmont’s three wine clubs: assist in choosing wines; ensure timely and accurate club releases, member payments and pick ups; communicate with club members; maintain high member satisfaction and increase membership.
Create monthly staff schedules
