Viticulture Intern – Aperture Cellars (Seasonal, April–October)

Aperture Cellars seeks a motivated intern to support top tier estate vineyards in Sonoma County. This role offers immersive, hands-on experience in precision viticulture and vineyard management, including data collection, detailed vineyard scouting, maturity sampling, and critical support for harvest operations. The intern will work closely with and report directly to the Viticulturist, gaining exposure to estate level decision making throughout the growing season and harvest. This is a physically demanding, outdoor position that requires long hours, with overtime and occasional night work during peak periods.

Applicants must have foundational experience in viticulture through relevant coursework, formal education, or hands-on vineyard work. Candidates pursuing or recently completing a bachelor’s degree in Viticulture or a related field are strongly encouraged to apply. Comfort with Microsoft Word and Excel are required. Spanish language skills are a plus but not required. Must be able to lift 40 lbs. and work reliably in the field across varying conditions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The following outlines the primary responsibilities of this position but is not intended to be an exhaustive list. Duties may be assigned or modified as business needs evolve or to support reasonable accommodation.

Data Collection & Analysis: Conduct detailed vine level data collection including porometer measurements and other assessments of vine water status and physiological performance. Perform yield estimates, virus, nutrition, and soil sampling, and assist with field trials evaluating vine response to management practices. Collect, validate, and organize data to support block level analysis, seasonal decision making, and long-term vineyard performance monitoring.

Vineyard Scouting: Perform detailed pest and disease scouting at estate vineyards and selected outside grower sites, reporting observations accurately and promptly.

Harvest Support: Assist with harvest operations including coordination with picking crews, support on the crush pad, and collection of berry chemistry samples.

Data Management & Reporting: Enter and organize field data, prepare reports, and maintain accurate equipment and vineyard operation records.

Equipment Operation: Safely operate ATVs and forklifts.

Compliance Requirements: A clean driving record and successful background check are required for employment.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Viticulture, Plant Science, Agriculture or similar preferred but not required.

Comfortable in both high-tech and hands-on environments.

Experienced with Bordeaux and Burgundy varietals.

Proficient with Microsoft 365 and vineyard software; quick to learn emerging tools.

Spanish language skills a plus, but not required.



Physical & Work Requirements

Ability to hike steep terrain, lift 50+ lbs, and work long hours during harvest.

Valid California driver’s license and dependable transportation.

Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Pay Range: $22.00 per hour
