As Controller, this hands-on role oversees the company’s accounting operations, including financial reporting, inventory and cost accounting, while managing the day-to-day accounting functions of a small, family-held winery business. This person will work closely with the winery's General Manager on all financial matters, including preparing and analyzing financial statements and annual budgets, financing, and all day-to-day accounting operations. The position needs to be hands-on, while also able to analyze financial outcomes at a broad level to understand the impact on the business.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Accounting Operations:
- Oversee and maintain the company’s accounting records, ensuring all financial transactions, balances, and company assets are accurately recorded and reconciled.
- Ensure that the Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Payroll functions are handled in a professional, accurate and customer-focused manner.
- Coordinate payroll administration, employee time-off tracking, and benefits reporting.
- Provide for the care, custody, and management of cash, including control of cash collections, bank accounts, reconciliations and cash disbursements.
- Provide accurate and timely financial statements, providing internal reports, bank reporting, budget vs. actual reports and individual department reports.
- Provide Inventory Control and Cost Accounting to ensure accurate and timely management of all product costing, relevant tax reporting, and inventory reporting.
Financial Systems:
- Maintain the financial, informational, and analytical systems and procedures that produce required information on a timely and cost-efficient basis.
Financial Planning:
- Support the analysis of short and long-term financing needs.
- Work with the General Manager to identify preferred financing sources and help negotiate financing terms.
- Work with the General Manager on the development of the annual and long-range plans.
- Assist with capital project planning, including financial modeling for vineyard development or winery additions.
Key Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience in all areas of financial reporting, planning, budgeting, general ledger, A/P, A/R, payroll, cash management and general business operations.
- Experience in the wine industry strongly preferred.
- Willing to be part of a small family-owned organization, with a hands-on, detail-oriented mentality.
- Proven ability to identify and propose creative and value-added financial solutions.
- Exceptional collaboration skills with both internal and external groups.
- Outstanding verbal and written English communication skills.
