Pence Vineyards & Winery is an estate-driven property located in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA of Santa Barbara County, one of California’s most respected cool-climate winegrowing regions. Defined by its rare transverse mountain range and strong Pacific influence, the region offers conditions uniquely suited to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, yielding wines distinguished by precision, natural acidity, and structural elegance.
Santa Barbara County has earned international recognition for its coastal terroirs and is widely regarded as a benchmark region for site-driven, cool-climate wines in the United States. Pence lies along the eastern boundary of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, where pronounced wind exposure and marine influence contribute to long growing seasons and nuanced fruit development.
Our vineyards are farmed entirely in-house by a dedicated team committed to long-term stewardship, soil health, and vine balance. This thoughtful approach allows for deliberate, qualitative harvest decisions rooted in site expression rather than formula. In the cellar, our philosophy centers on restraint, transparency of terroir, and minimal intervention, with élevage in French oak and a focus on typicity.
A harvest in this region offers immersion in one of North America’s most dynamic and respected cool-climate viticultural areas. As a small, focused team, we work closely and collaboratively. This years harvest intern will work directly with our Associate Winemaker and gain meaningful exposure to all aspects of production, resulting in a comprehensive and hands-on harvest experience.
