About Sakonnet Vineyard:

Founded in 1975, Sakonnet Vineyard is New England’s oldest vineyard, located in the picturesque coastal town of Little Compton, Rhode Island. With over 50 years of winemaking tradition, we are committed to quality, sustainability, and innovation. We are in the process of converting to organic farming and embarking on a large replanting initiative. Additionally, we are expanding our agricultural efforts by growing seasonal crops for our on-site restaurant, furthering our commitment to a farm-to-table culinary experience.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Lead Viticulture Technician to join our agricultural team. In this vital role, the individual will work directly with the vineyard and property managers in all aspects of the winegrowing process. They will be an integral part of the continued development of our farming program as we rehabilitate and reestablish this historic site, improve efficiencies, and implement more regenerative practices. This position offers an exciting opportunity to help lead a team while working hands-on with farm equipment, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices and farm productivity. Our aim is for this individual to grow into a long-term leadership role.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist in all vineyard operations though growing season: vineyard data collection, canopy management, undervine management, and harvest
Serve as team lead under the supervision and guidance of the vineyard manager
Operate tractors and implements for cultivation, mowing, and vineyard maintenance
Assist with the development and application of the vineyard spray program
Maintain field records for tracking vineyard progress
Participate in vineyard redevelopment and replanting projects
Support the vineyard’s transition towards more regenerative practices, including compost management, soil health management, and cover cropping
Assist in general groundskeeping as well as occasional construction projects
Perform essential maintenance and repair on farm equipment
Work flexible hours, including occasional weekends during peak growing season or inclement weather events
Assistance with cellar tasks as needed, such as bottling, canning, and labelling

Requirements:

Minimum 3 years of experience working in agriculture
Experience with perennial crop management, preference to those with experience with vineyard and/or orchard management
Farm leadership experience and experience managing small teams preferred
Experience operating tractors and farm implements
Willingness to obtain a commercial applicator's license
