The Cellar Master / Production Manager reports directly to the Winemaker and plays a key leadership role in executing winemaking operations, managing production staff, and maintaining a safe, organized, and efficient winery environment. This position requires strong technical knowledge, leadership ability, and a commitment to quality.
Key Responsibilities
• Winemaking & Cellar Operations
• Lead, train, and supervise cellar staff
• Set daily and weekly task priorities to ensure production goals are met
• Ensure safe and sanitary operation of all winery equipment
• Maintain a clean, organized production facility
• Oversee completion of daily and weekly closing checklists
• Maintain inventories of cleaning chemicals, production supplies, and inert gases
• Adhere to and improve Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
• Manage barrel operations: racking, topping, cleaning, maintenance, and inventory
• Prepare wine and juice additions
• Operate crossflow filtration
• Comply with Confined Space protocols for tank cleaning
Harvest Operations
• Provide schedule flexibility during harvest
• Train and oversee seasonal cellar workers
• Direct crush, press, and vessel setup and sanitation
• Ensure efficient workflow and adherence to quality standards
Bottling Operations
• Provide flexibility for bottling schedules
• Supervise temporary bottling staff
• Assist with quality control
• Coordinate movement of supplies and finished goods
Facility & Warehouse Management
• Monitor building systems (humidity, cooling, heating)
• Assist with facility maintenance
• Maintain warehouse organization
• Prepare and stage outgoing shipments
• Manage inventory in shipping areas
Additional Responsibilities
• Perform basic equipment maintenance (seals, gaskets, lubrication, hose repair)
• Participate in winery events as needed (e.g., pouring wine, guest interaction)
Qualifications
• Minimum 5+ years winery production experience preferred
• Strong technical knowledge of processing, fermentation, sanitation, racking, filtration, and wine additions
• Proven leadership and team management skills
• Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel; Vintrace experience a plus
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize multiple projects
• Positive, proactive, and solution-oriented mindset
• Physically capable of lifting 50 lbs, climbing ladders, and working extended hours during harvest
• Valid driver’s license
• Strong forklift skills required
