Aperture Cellars is seeking a forward-thinking Viticulturist with deep expertise in precision viticulture, data-driven decision making, and premium wine-grape farming. This role leads the strategic and operational management of our estate, leased, and grower-partner vineyards with an unwavering focus on quality, sustainability, and innovation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Develop and execute an annual viticulture strategy using advanced monitoring tools, block-by-block analysis, and predictive modeling.
• Integrate cutting-edge technologies including Fruition Sciences, soil moisture sensors, NDVI imagery, canopy analysis tools, and other data-driven platforms.
• Pilot and evaluate new technologies to optimize vine balance, water use efficiency, crop quality, and environmental sustainability.
• Direct weekly data collection—phenology, vine growth, irrigation metrics, maturity data, weather, sugar loading, and LWP—to inform real-time decisions.
• Analyze vineyard datasets to guide winemaking and viticulture decisions throughout the year.
• Maintain accurate records in Excel, SharePoint, Vintrace, and precision-ag platforms.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external vineyard management companies to set expectations, resolve growing challenges, and align practices with brand standards.
• Manage contracts and ensure compliance with quality specifications, farming protocols, and sustainability targets—including the goal of full organic certification.
• Coordinate sampling programs with a precision lens, including berry metrics (brix, pH, TA, berry weight) and phenolic maturity.
• Oversee all picks, verify quality, supervise seasonal interns, and collaborate closely with the winemaking team on timing and logistics.
• Spearheads sustainable initiatives through research and implementation with the goal of having all vineyards certified organic including additional certifications.
• Investigate opportunities to move vineyard operations and practices internally to vertically integrate operations to find savings and improve quality.
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Viticulture, Plant Science, Agriculture or similar required.
• A viticulture professional with 5+ continuous years of experience in premium wine-grape production.
• Comfortable in both high-tech and hands-on environments.
• Experienced with Bordeaux and Burgundy varietals.
• Skilled at turning complex data into actionable strategy.
• A clear communicator who can lead teams, partners, and seasonal staff.
• Passionate about sustainable farming, soil health, and continuous improvement.
• Proficient with Microsoft 365 and vineyard software; quick to learn emerging tools.
Physical & Work Requirements
• Ability to hike steep terrain, lift 50+ lbs, and work long hours during harvest.
• Valid California driver’s license and dependable transportation.
• Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
