Job Description:
Spottswoode Winery is looking for seasonal interns to learn and work hands-on in all aspects of the harvest winemaking process. You will work alongside our close-knit winemaking team with abundant opportunity to take on a breadth of tasks with ample learning opportunities.
We are a family-owned estate winery that emphasizes regenerative organic and biodynamic winegrowing. Our winery and vineyard teams partner closely as our Head Winemaker is also our Vineyard Manager. This allows for a deep connection between our vineyard and wine production operations. An intern at Spottswoode will have learning opportunities available to them in the winery, vineyard, and lab. We hope that this harvest position provides a learning experience and a hands-on, dynamic work environment. Our harvest team includes two interns working with our cellar master, assistant winemaker, three of the funniest guys on our vineyard team, and our head winemaker (also funny, sometimes).
Winery:
*Cleaning and sanitizing tanks, equipment, and barrels
*Perform cap management: mostly pump overs with some punch downs
*Monitoring fermentations
*Performing additions and inoculations on tanks and small vessel lots
*Filling and topping barrels
*Pressing white fruit
*Occasionally on the processing line for red fruit
*Draining and pressing tanks
Vineyard:
*Sampling estate fruit to track maturity
*Team vineyard visits across Napa and Sonoma
*Ample opportunities to ask our Head Winemaker the most tedious questions you can think of
*Opportunity to learn/help take care of our farm animals
Lab:
*Optional experience if interested to do Brix and pH/TA monitoring on fruit sampling
Physical Ability:
*Able to lift and carry 50 lbs.
*Comfortable moving barrels or learning how to
*Climbing stairs/ladders
*Walking/standing for extended periods of time
Ideal Candidates May Have:
*Easy-going and can-do attitude
*Detailed-oriented work ethic that can work on teams and individually to complete work orders
*1-2 prior work experiences in the vineyard or winery preferred
*Good taste in music is required
*Adhere to safety protocols
*Forklift experience is a plus (willing to teach basic skills)
