Position Overview:
The Controller manages all financial accounting, reporting, tax obligations and compliance activities for the organization. This role maintains accurate financial records, ensures timely reporting to ownership, oversees cash management, supports payroll and benefits administration, and manages regulatory filings across federal, state and local agencies.
Key Responsibilities:
• Financial reporting and analysis, including preparing balance sheets, journal entries, and asset statements quarterly, and managing year-end reporting needs
• Daily accounting and cash management, handling billing and account monitoring
• Sales reconciliation, invoicing, and taxable/nontaxable reporting
• Employee payroll, healthcare, and 401(k) administration
• Regulatory, licensing, and compliance management, including excise tax filings and licensing, permit, & registration renewals
• Bank reconciliation, investment oversight, and cash movement monitoring
• Collection reporting and distributor support
• Year-end requirements and audits, supporting tax preparation and payments
• Prepare payment checks to growers and maintain accurate harvest reporting records
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Strong knowledge of financial accounting principles including GAAP, cost accounting and multi-entity reporting
• High proficiency with QuickBooks
• Advanced Excel skills
• Ability to manage complex sales reconciliation processes across multiple systems
• Strong understanding of excise tax rules for wine production, storage and removal from bond
• Experience managing payroll workflows including timesheet collection, data entry, journal entries and benefit updates
• Skilled at preparing and reviewing financial statements, cash flow reports and inventory valuations
• Strong organization and recordkeeping abilities for managing files, renewals, permits and compliance tasks
• Ability to oversee multiple regulatory filings across federal, state and local agencies
• Commitment to high standards, with acute attention to detail and the ability to catch errors and reconcile data from multiple sources
• Strong organizational and written communication skills for distributing reports, coordinating with ownership and communicating with distributors and vendors, effectively managing priorities and workflow
• Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm, building positive working relationships internally and externally
Preferred Experience & Qualifications:
• Previous experience in the wine industry or a regulated beverage manufacturing environment
• Familiarity with TTB excise tax filing, CDTFA reporting and multi-state DTC compliance
• Experience working with payroll systems such as IBS and retirement plan portals
• Knowledge of inventory management processes including cased goods, library stock and third-party storage counts
• Prior involvement in annual financial audits, workers compensation audits or 401k plan testing
• Familiarity with CalRecycle reporting, state licensing renewals and credit card security compliance
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
• CPA or CMA
• Additional coursework or certifications in wine business management or regulatory compliance is a plus
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to comfortably operate computer-based tools and software for an extended duration
• Sitting for extended periods
• Occasionally lifting and carrying items up to 50 pounds

Salary range: $140,000-190,000
