Commonwealth Wine School is a leading provider of wine, spirits, beer, and sake education, offering WSET qualifications and a wide range of enthusiast and professional courses. Based in Cambridge, MA and in San Francisco, CA, and other satellite locations, we are committed to delivering high-quality, engaging education that supports both industry professionals and passionate enthusiasts.
We are seeking an Education Director of WSET Programs to oversee the academic quality, scheduling, and instructor support for our WSET qualifications. This role focuses on thoughtful planning, coordination across locations and online courses, and supporting our teaching team and students. The right candidate will have a desire to stay on top of new technologies and approaches in education and innovatively incorporate them into CWS’s class portfolio.
We are looking for an education-focused leader who is passionate about student learning and the craft of teaching. The ideal candidate enjoys collaborating closely with a small team, building supportive relationships with both students and instructors, and shaping programs that feel thoughtful and well-organized. This person is flexible, proactive, and willing to work hard behind the scenes to create consistently excellent student experiences across all levels of our WSET programs.
This is a part-time leadership role (0.5–0.7 FTE, ~20–28 hours/week) with the possibility of expanding to a full-time position for candidates who also teach regularly for Commonwealth Wine School.
The Education Director will work closely with our Director, Student Services Director, and administrative team, and will participate in weekly remote administrative team meetings in addition to the following responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities
Program Planning & Scheduling
- Plan and schedule all CWS WSET courses on a primarily bi-annual planning cycle, in collaboration with the leadership team (Cambridge, San Francisco, satellites, and online).
- Schedule and manage instructors for all in-person and online WSET courses.
- Coordinate certified teachers/assessors for all exams and, where appropriate, serve as exam invigilator and assessor.
- Maintain and periodically update the Google Calendar with teaching and exam schedules.
- Oversee wine selections with the administrative team, and coordinate with the staff member responsible for wine purchasing to ensure standard, consistent inventory for all WSET courses and exams.
Online Learning & Systems
- Update and create online course content for WSET programs.
- Ensure teachers have the correct access and training on our online learning platform.
- Perform light trimming and editing of live online session recordings and upload them to the appropriate courses in a timely manner.
- Monitor and maintain our WSET database in coordination with the Student Services Director.
Teacher Support & Training
- Maintain ongoing communication with instructors regarding upcoming teaching schedules and key dates.
- Ensure course materials (slides, session plans, tasting lists, etc.) are available to instructors ahead of classes.
- Provide regular teacher training on WSET pedagogy and best practices, including tasting, theory, grading, and feedback.
- Interview prospective instructors and, in collaboration with the Director, determine appropriate course levels and teaching opportunities.
Student & Teacher Communications
- Communicate with students about classes and exams.
- Send reminders and schedules to teachers about upcoming classes and responsibilities.
- Create and send a monthly WSET Diploma newsletter to current Diploma students.
Academic Quality & Student Support
- Provide mentorship and academic support to teachers and students, as needed.
- Schedule and manage WSET exam preparation sessions.
- Optionally, work outside the WSET program to create and/or teach other courses, depending on the candidate’s interests and experience.
Collaboration & Leadership
- Attend weekly remote meetings with the administrative team.
- Collaborate with the Director and Student Services Director to continually improve the student experience and program delivery.
Qualifications
Required
• Level 4 Diploma, WSET Certified Educator (Wines Level 3 and above), & additional WSET certifications preferred.
• Familiarity with WSET program operations (exam processes, assessor coordination, etc.).
• Demonstrated experience as an educator.
• Experience in management or program coordination (e.g., educational programs, hospitality, or similar).
• Strong communication and organizational skills; comfort juggling multiple courses, instructors, and timelines.
Preferred
• Some marketing skills and comfort with tools such as email platforms, Canva, and social media.
• Experience using online learning platforms and basic video editing (light trimming).
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating closely with a small team.
Work Schedule & Location
- Part-time, 0.5–0.7 FTE (approximately 20–28 hours per week). Most responsibilities can be performed remotely within the U.S.
- Preference for candidates able to collaborate effectively across time zones and who can occasionally visit Cambridge, MA or San Francisco, CA.
This is a part-time salaried position; compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Details of salary and any benefits will be discussed with candidates during the interview process.
