Job Description:

Job Summary:

Perform routine physical and chemical analysis of grapes, juice, wine, water, or any other related material pertaining to the operation of the Winery. Maintain and manage quality records at Sonoma. Oversee bottling personnel QC checks and execute training when required. While doing so, adheres to the site's operating procedures and safety practices.
Roles and Responsibilities:
•  Daily set-up and calibration of laboratory equipment.
•  Preparation and standardization of laboratory reagents.
•  Collect and prepare juice/wine samples for analysis.
•  Perform juice/wine analysis in a timely fashion, using either automated or bench chemistry analytical methods, including:
•  o Brix & temperature
•  o Ammonia, free amino nitrogen, potassium
•  o pH, free & total sulfur
•  o Titratable & volatile acidity
•  o Acetic acid, malic acid, residual sugar
•  o Ethanol
•  o Dissolved oxygen, specific gravity, carbon dioxide, turbidity
•  Collect grapes samples from the vineyards during harvest.
•  Set-up of various wine trials, including heat and cold stabilities.
•  Routine preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment.
•  Inform supervisors of the need to purchase lab operating supplies.
•  Maintain and grow Botrytis cinerea for the late harvest wine program.
•  Bottling quality control, including:

o Incoming supply quality control inspections
•  o Bottling line hourly quality control checks
•  o Microbiological plating checks
•  o Morning start-up checks-alcohol, FSO2, DO, CO2
•  Winery water quality control, including:
•  o Weekly/monthly pond water checks
•  o Well & pump house pH checks.
•  o Monthly industrial storm water observations and sampling.
•  Assist supervisors with recordkeeping, FDA lot tracking, analysis entry, or any other database entry.
•  Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the lab.
•  Works with Lab Supervisor and Operations Staff to assure products meet/exceed wine and packaging quality standards.
•  Work with HACCP and GMP programs.
•  Understand and comply with all company Health/Safety/Environmental procedures.
•  Participates in investigation efforts relative to external and internal Wine and Package quality events through the MIR and QAR systems.
•  Assist in the maintenance and enforcement of standard operating procedures and policies.
•  Audit and inspect areas of operations to ensure Safety and Food Safety standards are met.
•  Perform special projects as required.
•  Coordinate and collaborates across functions to achieve given responsibilities.
•  Responsible for approving wine bottle-ready prior to start-up.

Knowledge, Skills & Other Abilities
•  A BS or BA degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or enology preferred.
•  Excellent communication skills - verbal, written and listening skills.
•  Must be computer literate (word and excel) with excellent reasoning abilities and outstanding organization & verbal communication skills.
•  Must be able to communicate in English (spoken and written).
•  Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and be a team player who can work with minimal supervision.
•  Required to work rotating shifts and overtime.
•  Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time and lift up to 40 lbs.
•  Ability to multi-task and respond quickly to demanding situations.
•  Must be able to do basic math.
•  Must have excellent organizational skills.
