Position Purpose
Under general supervision, the Tasting Room Assistant Manager’s responsibilities include providing leadership and direction in the Tasting Room, coordinating point of sale materials and merchandise, processing transactions, and offering exceptional customer service to guests visiting the Tasting Room. As a part of the Tasting Room management team, the Assistant Manager actively works to drive sales and wine club sign-ups, model successful sales techniques, control costs, manage resources and to deliver revenue and operating profit to plan. This is a working manager position, and will be working the floor while managing.
Functional Responsibility
• Supervises the day-to-day operations and assigns staff in accordance with management’s direction
• Leads in a constructive manner by example; demonstrates and encourages a strong work ethic and fosters an environment of trust and respect
• Guides team in the proper use of assets and resources to avoid waste and ensure cost effective operations
• Monitors performance and regularly communicates with team to achieve mutual understanding, maintain level of productivity, and deliver desired results
• Partners with immediate manager to determine staffing needs
• Ensures employees have a safe, healthy, and rewarding work environment
• Supports change initiatives and company decisions in an effective manner
• Immediately informs management and addresses employee issues, concerns, and complaints in an objective and confidential manner
• Ensures employees are trained on the policies, processes, and procedures related to functional area; maintains company and regulatory compliance during day-day operations
Essential Duties
• Manages the day-to-day functions of the Tasting Room and provides directions to Tasting Room staff
• Oversee the opening and closing of the Tasting Room, including cash register balancing, deposit preparation, and ensuring all procedures are followed accurately.
• Coordinates with Tasting Room Manager, Estate Director, Proprietor, and Tasting Room Teams, on winery wide issues
• Maintain adequate stock levels of wine, supplies, glassware, bags, and more, alerting the Tasting Room Manager of any replenishment needs or assists in ordering
• Partners with Tasting Room Manager to develop individual performance goals aligned with Company goals and communicate clearly defined objectives
• Opens and closes Tasting Room as needed
• Manages Meal Breaks and hourly team hours according to state law and company policy
• Serves as Manager on Duty when Tasting Room Manager is not onsite
• Assists in the onboarding of new employees, including Tasting Room operations, winery history and brand messaging
• Troubleshoots POS system issues when required
• Supports sales by successfully operating the POS system, ringing sales, placing shipping orders, opening, and reconciling cash drawers accurately
• Manages cash handling of multiple POS machines, including cash drawers
• With input from the Tasting Room Manager, orders wines weekly to maintain onsite inventory
• Manages monthly wine inventory
• Responds to customer communications professionally and in a timely manner
• Enters new merchandise items into Commerce7; receives, prices, stocks and displays non-wine merchandise, as needed
• Assists Tasting Room Manager with preparation of department budget and controlling costs
• Maintain high standards of cleanliness in both indoor and outdoor spaces
• Greets guests to the Tasting Room and assist guests with wine tasting, education, and purchases.
• Cultivate, maintain, and expand lasting positive relationships with guests.
• Accurately describes wines, winemaking techniques, appellations, unique aspects of our wine, and winery history.
• Is passionate about seeking wine knowledge and can accurately describe wines, winemaking techniques, winery history, appellations, unique characters of wine.
• Promote and sell wines, wine club memberships, accessories, and merchandise to guests.
• Provide excellent customer service, in person, email, or over the telephone
• Provides a positive environment for other team members and fosters positivity in the tasting room. Has a glass half full kind of attitude when it comes to hospitality and guest relations and shares that energy with the team.
• Act as a passionate informed resource for consumers regarding winemaking, winegrowing, production, vintages, products and availability and awards and accolades
