Big Basin Vineyards focuses on producing small-lot and single vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Rhone varietals from our Santa Cruz Mountain estate vineyard (Certified Organic) along with other exceptional Santa Cruz Mountain and Gabilan Mountain vineyards. We produce approx. 5,000 cases.
We're looking to hire an intern for the 2025 harvest! Prior experience is preferred, however hard-working individuals with a knowledge of wine and wine production will not go overlooked. The winemaking team will consist of the Winemaker, Associate Winemaker and one intern. This is a great chance to be a part of the decision making process in terms of all harvest logistics. Interns will carry out a wide variety of hands-on, small-batch winemaking tasks in all facets of harvest work. The position will last from approx. mid-August through mid-November. This position would typically be 40 hours per week (with some overtime) over an 8-10 week period, depending on picking schedules.
We strive to create a positive learning experience here at Big Basin. Our wines are produced with minimal intervention techniques using native primary/secondary fermentation, minimal additions, unfined and unfiltered.
The interns will work closely with staff in a unique and fun atmosphere. Duties and responsibilities will include assisting in and/or carrying out the following:
-Harvest preparation
-Cleaning and sanitation of winery equipment (fermentation bins, destemmer, shaker table, press)
-Vineyard Sampling
-Processing of incoming fruit (weighing fruit, sorting fruit, running the destemmer/shaker)
-Fermentation maintenance (pumpovers/foot treading/punchdowns/Brix and temp)
-Pressing/barreling
-Cleaning everything!
-Topping and racking previous vin tages
-Other winery related tasks
-Laboratory analyses
-Glucose/Fructose
-Malic Acid
-Volatile Acidity
-NOPA
-pH
-TA
-Free/Total SO2
-Bench Trials
Qualifications
-Possess a positive attitude
-Attention to detail and a commitment to quality
-Motivated and passionate about wine
-Previous industry experience preferred
-Flexible and willing to work varying shifts, overtime, and weekends
-Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
-Ability to accurately complete work instructions individually or in a team
-Ability to lift 50 pounds
-Forklift certification a plus
-Spanish language skills highly valued
