The instructor, reporting to the Director of Instruction, is responsible for teaching viticulture and enology curriculum in an Associate of Applied Science degree program. Duties include teaching, curriculum development, course scheduling, winery lab and vineyard management, and supplies and equipment ordering. This is a full-time, 10- month faculty appointment with administrative duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
• Teach and advise students in the viticulture and enology program
• Create an effective learning environment for students while using appropriate resources, technology, and pedagogy in the delivery of courses
• Responsible for instruction to follow approved curriculum and to achieve course student learning outcomes
• Evaluate student performance in coursework and make necessary provisions to meet learning needs
• Maintain student communication, grades and attendance through CMU/CMU Tech Learning Management System
• Order supplies and maintain equipment as needed
• Monitor lab competencies and confirm skill levels
• Perform all responsibilities and instructional duties in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as CMU Tech/CMU policies and procedures
• Coordinator of the Warren Winiarski/Gerald Ivancie Institute for Viticulture and Enology (WWGIIVE). This includes maintaining an engaged program advisory committee (2 meetings a year) representing both the V&E program and the WWGIIVE and providing fundraising assistance. • Also collaborating through industry research and students in the program.
• Arrange and coordinate guest speakers and field trips
• Maintain good working relations with related business and industry
• Review and update program curriculum as required by business, industry and in accordance with Higher Learning Commission requirements
• Recommend, monitor and update course and program outcomes and assessments
• Promote a positive collegiate atmosphere and develop positive relationships with other faculty and students
• Significant participation in recruiting, retention, and advising required
• Collaborate with Director of Instruction in the development and refinement of program curriculum and scheduling
• Maintain necessary professional and educational credentials and currency appropriate to teaching assignments; apply for CTE credential within 6 months of employment
• Participate in professional development activities that facilitate professional expertise in the areas of teaching and maintenance of viticulture and enology competence
• Participate in local, state, or national related professional associations
• Assist with open houses and orientation
• Maintain student files with required paperwork as well as intent to graduate forms
• Maintain and manage program budget
Minimum Qualifications Required:
• Associate’s degree from an accredited institution in viticulture, enology, chemistry, microbiology, or related field and sommelier certificates plus five years of related work experience; or
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in viticulture, enology, chemistry, microbiology, or related field and minimum of 2,000 hours of work experience in the last 7 years
• Basic computer skills, strong communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
• Demonstrated teaching experience, at either secondary or post-secondary level, in related field (work experience may be considered for some of the teaching experience).
• Master’s degree from an accredited institution in viticulture, enology, chemistry, microbiology, or related field
• Industry related certificates or licenses
