Hamel Family Wines, located in Sonoma Valley, California is seeking a vineyard intern to assist its core winegrowing team for the second half of the growing season, which is expected to last from the beginning of May through the beginning of October. Successful candidates will share a passion for viticulture and wine, an interest in learning about dry farming, biodynamic grape growing and the winemaking process, be prepared to work hard in a team-oriented, exacting work environment, and willing to work long, concentrated hours both indoors and out in the field. The position will be demanding and require a deep commitment to detail, rigor and focus throughout the winegrowing process that takes no shortcuts in its pursuit for the highest quality.
Our Vineyard Internship is a unique opportunity to spend the growing season immersed in the vineyard, tracking crucial data to help guide key winegrowing decisions. The intern will gain exposure to intensive farming and winemaking practices for our wines that come from 100 acres of biodynamically and dry farmed, estate vineyards in Sonoma Valley and the Moon Mountain District. The position will also assist in the winery on an as-needed basis for racking, blending, bottling, topping, sulfuring, etc.
The intern will work closely with a small team – consisting of the viticulturist, winemaker, enologist, vineyard foreman and cellar master during the growing season – and will learn a dynamic set of responsibilities in the vineyard and winery and contribute immensely to a set of premium wines that are strongly focused on the expression of terroir.
Vineyard Responsibilities Include:
• Phenology Monitoring and Tracking;
• Plant Water Status Monitoring;
• Yield Estimation;
• Pest and Disease Scouting;
• Data tracking and input;
• ArcGis and/or QGis Mapping (previous experience strongly preferred);
• Other duties as assigned.
The intern position will require long, concentrated hours at the winery and in the vineyard and can include weekends and evenings/early mornings.
Requirements:
• Passion for terroir and the connection between the vineyard and wine quality;
• Previous winery and/or vineyard experience;
• Strong work ethic and self starter;
• Ability to work long and focused hours;
• Pleasant, team-oriented attitude;
• Enthusiasm to engage in all winery and vineyard tasks;
• Deep attention to detail;
• Strong communication skills; competency in Spanish a plus;
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.;
• Studies in viticulture or enology or related sciences preferred;
• Excel and ArcGis experience preferred;
• Previous ATV/UTVs driving experience on hilly terrain preferred;
• Valid driver’s license.
Time Frame: May - October 2025. Exact term of internship is dependent on the growing season.
