Harvest Intern

Preston Farm and Winery

Healdsburg, CA

Job Description:

Preston Farm & Winery is seeking an intern for the upcoming harvest season at our winery in Dry Creek Valley, Healdsburg.

We are a small winemaking team working closely together on a beautiful, certified organic property of roughly 130 acres, with 65 acres planted to 16 varieties, all farmed regeneratively with no tillage. We expect to crush about 150 tons of fruit this year, and all of our wines are made from 100% estate-grown grapes. Many Rhone grapes are planted, along with old-vine Zinfandel, Carignane and Sauvignon Blanc, and some smaller quantities of lesser-known Italian grapes that make for some fun fermentations. We make our wines in small lots, always fully by hand with rigor and attention to detail. This will be a great opportunity for the right candidate to gain experience in a wide range of tasks; we don't ask anyone to specialize but instead encourage each person to learn about and participate in almost everything we do during harvest.

In addition to growing grapes and making wine, we have a diverse operation: a farm team that sells organic produce from the property, dozens of sheep and chickens, an apple orchard from which we produce cider, 1500 oil-producing olive trees, and a bread-baking operation headed up by Lou Preston himself. This position is just focused on wine and cider though ;-)

Here are a few hard qualifications:
-The absolute commitment to working hard and with rigor and attention to detail is essential above all else
-Long hours but good vibes
-Physical fitness & the ability to lift 50 pounds
-Able and willing to fit inside a standard tank door for cleaning
-Comfortable on ladders & in high places
-21+ by 8/1/24

No previous experience is required, just a willingness to learn and work hard. Specific tasks are too many to list, but if you're on winejobs looking for an internship you've probably got a good idea of what they are -- and at Preston you'll get to be involved in almost every activity we do at some point. There will likely be some vineyard-centric jobs before harvest starts as well: cluster counts, field assessments, and grape sampling etc. Spanish-speaking skills are a plus, as is a passion and curiosity for wines of the world and a desire to share your favorites with the team, an appreciation of music, a great sense of humor and an upbeat, positive attitude.

Please use winejobs to apply with a resume and a brief but custom cover letter. We'll do our best to respond to all applicants. We regret that we are unable to facilitate work visas, etc -- all candidates must be authorized and legal to work in the US at the time of employment. Competitive hourly wage plus overtime and a food allocation. Position runs from approximately mid-August to Thanksgiving, but is flexible within reason.

The Preston Team
