About Us:
Burgess is making a unique mark on the Napa Valley. The winery, established in 1972 but with roots dating back to the late 1870s, holds a significant place in Napa's history. Notable figures such as Warren Winiarski and Mike Grigich had their first winemaking experiences in the cellars that eventually became Burgess. Despite the unfortunate loss of two historic winery buildings in the 2020 fires, the old vineyards were preserved and we continue to produce wine from them today. Our winery is now in the former Luna winery on the Silverado Trail, which itself boasts a rich history featuring famous Napa winemakers and pioneering natural winemakers.

Our Winemaker is fervently pushing progressive and innovative farming methods in our four estate vineyards, making Burgess the first in Napa to implement a regenerative farming approach called, Agricultura Promiscua or Promiscuous Agriculture. This unique method involves interplanting fruit trees among the vines. We are certified organic, biodynamic and champion biodiversity with tea gardens, pollinator gardens, a small animal pasture housing cows, sheep, chickens, beehives, and dogs which are integrated into our farming system. In the cellar, our Winemaker employs a low-intervention approach to winemaking reminiscent of Napa in the 1970s with Italian and French influences. The focus is on capturing freshness and the authentic expression of fruit from each distinct vineyard and variety.

Burgess is seeking an energetic and motivated individual to join our wine production team as a Cellar Intern. This is an exciting opportunity with a company dedicated to producing outstanding wines. Qualifications, Experience and Key Responsibilities:
Candidates should have a minimum of one year of experience working in the production environment of a premium winery and be able to perform all the following operations with minimal training or supervision:
•  Cellar Operations, including stainless-steel tank sanitation, cellar equipment sanitation, barrel steaming and sulphuring and forklifting (certification eligible).
•  Crush / Harvest Operations, including crush equipment sanitation, pump over set-up sanitation, addition set-up sanitation and stainless-steel tank sanitation
•  Assists with and actively works towards proficiency in topping, racking, transfers, loading and unloading tankers, additions, inoculations, sample collections, barrel work, fruit intake and processing, pump overs and assisting in pressing operations
•  Safe Operations, including consistently adhering to winery and legally mandated safety policies and procedures by, maintaining familiarity of the content and emergency response procedures contained in all MSDS and ensures all equipment is operated in a safe manner, immediately notifying Assistant Winemaker of any mechanical malfunction or equipment requiring maintenance.
•  Sanitary Operations, including consistently and proactively maintaining proper cellar sanitation, assuring all cellar equipment is properly sanitized before use. Consistently performs sanitation checks on all vessels (barrels, tanks, etc.) prior to filling with wine. Observes and adheres to wine quality control standards while performing cellar operations.
•  Leads by setting an example to others, conducting all operations and tasks with purpose and without taking shortcuts, completing tasks in accordance with written and verbal instructions and demonstrating the highest degree of quality workmanship, sanitation and cleanliness while carrying out tasks efficiently and responsibly.
We expect the following of all team members:
1. Accept and embrace direction and constructive feedback from the Winemaker and Assistant Winemaker
2. Maintain proper time and attendance and be timely in taking meals and rest breaks
3. Effectively communicate, in English, both written and verbal, understanding instructions and directives
4. Math proficiency and accuracy in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
5. Apply common sense understanding and logic to a variety of tasks and duties
6. Dedication to professionalism, emotional maturity and maintaining confidentiality
7. Maintain the physical capability to carry out the tasks assigned to them including, full body mobility, lifting and carrying fifty pounds and hearing acuity
8. Willingness to work indoors and outdoors, in all weather and temperature conditions, standing and working on hard surfaces for extended periods of time, irregular and variable shifts including overtime and weekends as necessary
9. Able to occasionally work with some farm animals including sheep, chickens, and dogs on tasks such as maintenance, feeding, etc.
Team members must be at least 18 years of age, have a valid Driver’s License, a dependable form of transportation and be insurable by company standards.
