Job Description:

Hazy Mountain Vineyards and Winery in Afton, Virginia, within the Monticello AVA, is hiring a Head Winemaker. The Head Winemaker will manage and lead all of the daily winery production, processing, and bottling operations. With two estate vineyards in two Virginia AVAs, Monticello and Shenandoah Valley, we have 86 acres under vine and an annual production of approximately 18k cases annually. We are seeking a highly motivated, extremely passionate individual to join our team and pursue producing the highest quality wine possible.

Key responsibilities include:
•  Managing and executing the day-to-day operations of the winery and lab
•  Manage and execute all aspects of production, harvest processing, fermentation, transferring, aging, fining, filtering, final bottling preparations, and bottling.
•  Maintaining sanitation and upkeep of the bottling line.
•  Maintaining SOPs for sanitation, safety, record keeping
•  Maintaining safety and safety protocols for all team members, yourself, and the winery space
•  Maintaining wine data and records
•  Develop team-level strategies for continual production, vineyard, and sales improvement.
•  Managing bonded inventory, record keeping, and reporting to government agencies
•  Managing inventory reports to management and accounting team
•  Prepare Purchase Order Requests and order materials and supplies for winery production, packaging, and bottling
•  Oversee the delivery of all wine and beer inventory from the bonded space to the tasting room and venue
•  Work with the vineyard management team to perform fruit sampling and analysis
•  Assist with the tasting room staff's wine knowledge and sales training
•  Host wine club member and public events such as winery tours and barrel tastings
•  Assist with offsite wine sales to distribution clients
•  Responsible for timely and critical reporting to accounting teams.
•  Represent the winery in on- and off-site marketing and related events

Key Requirements:
•  Proven working knowledge of high-quality winemaking, production, operations, and bottling
•  Passion for winemaking, speaking about wine, and representing the brand
•  Disciplined work ethic, accountability, and follow-through
•  Dedication to continually learning and growing in your craft, production methods, protocols, and general outlook
•  Strong leadership abilities, keeping a team safe, motivated, and effective
•  Excellent communication skills and ability to confer with Winemaking, vineyard, and upper management teams
•  Must be able to work with other management team members to develop plans, schedules, strategies, solutions, goals, etc.
•  Excellent organizational skills, maintaining data, records, and communication is of top-level importance in this role
•  Must have strong analytical and critical thinking skills
•  Must be capable of troubleshooting and creating solutions for problems with wine, equipment, building infrastructure, etc.
•  Must be self-motivated, capable of working independently as well as with and leading a team
•  Excellent customer-facing skills and ability to interact with guests, wine club members, media representatives as well as other members of the industry

Qualifications:
•  A degree in Viticulture and Enology is highly preferred
•  Minimum five years experience in a full-time role in wine production
•  Proven track record producing high-quality wines
•  Experience managing a team and daily operations
•  Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, emphasis on Excel
•  Experience managing and inventory
•  Experience with customer service and wine sales
•  Ability to work extended hours and consecutive days during harvest and production periods
•  Ability to keep the team safe and operating in a safe manner
•  Ability to be responsible for the safety of all team members
•  Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
•  Ability to lift 50 pounds
•  Ability to stand on feet for extended periods
