Job Description:

Position Summary:

This position will report directly to the lab tech but will also interface with the Raymond Vineyards winemaking and cellar staff. This person will follow sound analytical practices while generating data. Assignments will include: sampling, standardization, instrument calibration, bench-top trials, and cleaning. The harvest lab tech may also perform inoculations and support cellar staff when needed.

Essential Functions:

Perform periodic tastings of samples for quality control; identifying flaws or problems and/or identifying superior quality lots, laying groundwork for blending, tracking fermentation process.

Maintain close contact with production/cellar staff, tracking winemaking operations for purposes of planning, scheduling, and performing analysis and sampling.

Operate/troubleshoot laboratory equipment: arrange for repairs, maintenance, and/or replacement when necessary.

Maintain clean, organized environment within the lab. Prepare and standardize routine chemicals for use in tasks listed above.

Participate in scheduling work orders and maintaining activities calendar.

Prepare samples as requested for brokers, bulk sales, private label or other sales channels as needed.
•  Possess intermediate computer skills which can include e-mail, spreadsheet, basic database activity, and comfort with standard winemaker software programs.

Additional Functions:

•  Comply with all company safety policies, practices, and procedures. Participate in safety training and report all unsafe conditions or work practices.
•  Participate in team efforts and perform additional duties as needed.

Necessary Skills:

Language: Ability to speak and understand basic English required for all positions.
•  Ability to read and interpret documents such as memos, instructions, policies and manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to present information effectively to groups of customers and/or employees, and participate in one-on-one and small group situations.

Math:

•  Ability calculate items such as percentages, areas, circumference, and volume. Ability to understand fractions, ratios, and proportions. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Logic:

•  Ability to apply common sense understanding to a variety of tasks and duties. Ability to adapt to minor changes in routine, solve basic problems, and work with moderate supervision.

Computer:

•  Possess intermediate computer skills which can include e-mail, internet, word processing, spreadsheet, basic database activity.

Education, Experience, Certificates, Licenses:

•  Academic and/or professional laboratory experience is required. Wine-specific analytical experience is ideal. Those who are detail-oriented, analytically-minded, and flexible to changing priorities will be best suited to the position.
•  Current, valid Driver's License, insurable driving record, and proof of current automobile insurance required.

Physical Requirements:

•  Moderate physical activity performing occasional somewhat strenuous activities including standing, walking, climbing, reaching, and carrying. Manual dexterity sufficient to reach, handle items, and work with the fingers. Requires lifting and moving objects up to 50 lbs. in weight. Clear vision (close and distant) and ability to adjust focus. Hearing adequate for telephone, office, and group conversation.

Work Environment:

•  Indoor and outdoor environment with variable lighting, temperature and/or ventilation. Areas may or may not be heated, air-conditioned, or shaded. Outdoor periods frequently required in changing weather conditions. Exposure to fumes and/or a variety of chemicals. Moderate to high noise levels typical of machinery, power tools, vehicles, and other equipment. (Note: PPE provided for all workers.)

Schedule and Travel Requirements:

•  Variable schedule: primarily a set schedule but may require weekends, periodic evenings, and/or periodic or seasonal overtime.
•  Position does not require overnight travel.
