Job Description – Adult Beverage Department Manager

Job Title: Adult Beverage Department Manager
Reports to: Store Management
Department: Beer, Liquor, & Wine
Compensation: DOE

An Adult Beverage Managers job is to select, purchase, price, display, and promote Beer, Liquor, & Wine while supervising the department’s staff to meet objectives for sales, margin, inventory control, labor, and customer service.

The Adult Beverage Manager is also tasked with ensuring department cleanliness, price integrity, quality control, training, merchandising, and receiving. You will leverage your own experience and knowledge of these categories to create sales plans, execute promotions, oversee category management, build relationships with vendors and local suppliers, foster a culture of collaboration across the stores while supporting merchandising decisions, purchasing, and business strategies.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1) Purchasing:
a) Negotiate with suppliers for favorable prices, terms, quality, and delivery.
b) Purchase Beer, Liquor, & Wine following the company’s overall strategy and execution of product assortment, promotion, pricing, and placement in the stores.
c) Evaluate suppliers and investigate new sources of supply.
d) Purchase special deals and promotions. Ensure adequate and timely supply of promoted products.
e) Ensure accurate, up-to-date prices of all products in POS system and shelf tags.
f) Receive orders and ensure proper receiving by other staff in accordance with established procedures.
g) Coordinate with suppliers for the handling of returns and obtaining credit for returned products.

2) Receiving:
a) Check the load against the invoice for proper billing.
b) Report overages and shortages to suppliers
c) Inspect all products for accuracy. Identify products that are not acceptable, report to the supplier and request credit.
d) Put load away in designated storage area, while maintaining proper rotation and cleanliness.

3) Department Maintenance:
a) Ensure that department shelves, displays, aisles, storage areas are in clean, orderly conditions, meeting all health department standards.
b) Ensure trash is removed; sales floor and storage areas are swept daily.
c) Keep shelves well stocked with minimal out of stocks and limit backstock
d) Have items marked down as needed to reduce losses.
e) Perform equipment checks to ensure department equipment is in working order.

4) Merchandising:
a) Plan attractive displays
b) Ensure displays are replenished and rotated
c) Attend store meetings with other departments to plan promotions and storewide merchandising opportunities.
d) Price products to achieve margin and sales goals, while maintaining a competitive image.
e) Ensure building and maintaining of in-store displays, according to established standards for appearance, variety and ease of shopping and stocking.
f) Ensure accurate, up-to-date uniform department signs.
g) Visit other stores for price comparisons, product, and merchandising ideas.

5) Customer Service:
a) Assist customers with Beer, Liquor, & Wine questions in prompt friendly manner.
b) Assist customers with special orders and oversee special orders system in the department to ensure customers receive their orders.
c) Pass on relevant literature to staff for department staff to read about products.
d) Ensure department staff is aware of changes in policies and procedures affecting customers.
e) Respond to customer suggestions, comments & complaints in a reasonable manner.
f) Always make our customers know that they are important and special, assist in any other department as needed.
g) Answer & route phone calls.
h) Discuss Beer, Liquor, & Wine with customers and assist with selection

6) Supervision:
a) Hire qualified applicants following established policy.
b) Ensure on the job training for all staff
c) Recommend pay increases within the department
d) Take disciplinary actions as needed following established policy.
e) Schedule hours for department within budget, and review timecards
f) Provide training, supervision, and support of the department in all areas
g) Organize department meetings
h) Ensure safety training meetings and maintain records.
i) Ensure on-the-job training, conduct performance evaluations, and take disciplinary action as needed following established policies.
j) Leads change through process, communication and most importantly by example

Qualifications & Skills:
Minimum 3-5 years' experience in Beer, Liquor, or Wine department operations or equivalent experience
Minimum of three (3) year experience managing teams.
Strong P&L and financial acumen understanding.
Strong leadership & negotiation skills
Proven ability to lead through influencing required.
Ability to set challenging goals, and work through others to achieve results
Knowledge of current trends in the grocery industry with an emphasis on Beer, Liquor, & Wine
Proficient knowledge of Beer, Liquor, & Wine
Supervisory experience: hiring, training, evaluating, and giving directions
Ability to read financial statements
Organized, consistently follows through on commitments
Demonstrates the ability to handle multiple demands
Communications skills – clear directions, good listener
Positive attitude
Experience serving the public
Ability to project friendly, outgoing personality
The potential for prolonged standing, walking, squatting, and/or bending
Ability to lift heavy boxes frequently up to 50 pounds and occasionally team lifting to 75 pounds
Ability to stand for long periods. Frequent use of hands.
Occasionally required to climb, balance and stoop, kneel or crouch
Ability to work in cold, wet conditions
Ability to read and interpret documents such as department manuals and reports
Ability to prioritize work tasks, multi-task, and maintain focus
Willingness to work weekends
Occasional high stress when dealing with systems/customers/staff
