Job Description:

Head Winemaker Role Description

Our Client is one of Ohio’s oldest and largest wineries still in operation located in Northern Ohio on Lake Erie. They produce over 35,000 cases annually under 4 main labels, which range from estate vinifera varietals to sweet labrusca varietals, blends, and beyond. As the head winemaker, you will lead the cellar and vineyard teams. You will set a winemaking schedule, track wine movements for compliance, write work orders, oversee 20 acres of estate vineyards, ensure quality cellar procedures are observed, create blends, write tasting notes, interpret laboratory analysis, identify, and place necessary orders, manage vineyard and cellar staff, and be the face of the winemaking team for bulk and private label sales, among other tasks. During harvest, you will coordinate a larger team, which includes the production staff, to harvest and ferment quality wines. The head winemaker will also perform occasional additions and movements, especially during harvest.
The successful candidate will meet the following requirements:
A degree in enology or related field
Minimum 5 years’ experience in wine production, including a minimum 1 year experience with laboratory work
Meticulous attention to detail, ability to do calculations and conversions with accuracy and ease
Knowledge of compliance and regulations
Dedication to production of quality wine
Strong organizational, supervisory, and communication skills
Forklift experience
Knowledge of vineyard schedule, pruning, and spraying
Open and flexible availability for the full harvest season
Mechanically Inclined

Assistant Winemaker Role
As Assistant Winemaker, you will join the small and dedicated production team. You will follow and execute written work orders from the winemaker, performing tasks such as fruit/wine receival, crushing, additions, oxygen management, racking, punch-downs, pump-overs, filtering, and barrel work. You will assist on the bottling line and in the vineyard as needed. You and the cellar hand will also be responsible for the cleanliness of the cellar, including the regular sanitation of equipment, tanks, and accessories. You will also prepare and help to evaluate blend and addition trials and use sensory skills to identify any issues in wines. The assistant winemaker role is hands-on and dynamic, with great opportunities for mentorship and continuous learning.
The successful applicant will meet the following requirements:
Meticulous attention to detail and strong problem solving/thinking on feet
Ability to regularly squat, bend, twist, crawl, fit in enclosed spaces, lift and carry 55 lbs and climb to heights safely
Ability to work in all different environmental conditions
Ability to do basic calculations and conversions with accuracy
Team player with strong communication skills
Strong time management to individually handle multiple ongoing projects
Full availability and flexible schedule during harvest months (Late August - Early November); long hours and six-day weeks will be common during this time
Positive attitude and desire to continually learn
And meet some of these additional qualifications:
Knowledge of Fermentation
Laboratory experience and the ability to perform analysis precisely and consistently
Working knowledge of pumps, presses, and filtration
A trained palate and working knowledge of wine styles
Very mechanically inclined
Forklift experience and/or certification
Strong applicants will have: 1 to 3 harvests of experience in wine production and/or
A degree in vinification/viticulture/enology or related field
