This 20-year wine shop continues to be ever evolving as the industry changes and we are looking for your enthusiasm and creativity to continue to help us grow.
This is a great job for people who love variety in their days. This position is divided… around half your time will be creating social media content as well as handouts and easy website updates. The rest of your time will be spent preparing for our to-go wine tastings, and helping our guests with wine sales. You’ll join the shop owner for virtual tastings and wine classes to help moderate chats; and in the process- you’ll learn a lot about wine and meet super amazing people. And of course, just like any small business; there’s also stocking shelves, and random “anything else that needs doing.”
This job is for someone who is looking to launch into the wine industry; typically, people spend 3-5 years in this position before jumping to the next stage of their career. We’re here to help you grow, learn, and launch!
The Wine Cellar is a great place to work! Erin Palmer has owned the shop for 20 years. We focus on family-owned wineries who make good choices for the planet and for their community. Erin has been teaching at Portland Community College for 20 years and will help you improve your skills and knowledge about not only the Oregon wine industry, but international wines, too. We have regular tastings in the shop with suppliers, wineries, and importers. You’ll join in those to further increase your knowledge. We go to wineries and vineyards, trade events, and are extended countless interesting invitations to learn and enjoy the business. Diversity in the wine industry is celebrated!
Requirements: You must love wine and already have a solid knowledge of wines; enough that you can offer customers good advice. Perhaps your experience is with formal training like WSET or sommelier, or you’ve worked in a tasting room or restaurant with a wine focus. Next, you must really enjoy helping our guests and your colleagues. Then, a competency and comfort with computers and technology. We update our super-simple website, create docs in Google and MS Office, we create fun and engaging social media posts, and our sales are completed through QB POS. Curiosity and confidence that you can learn new things will allow you to grow into the position. Flexibility, teamwork, and dependability are essential. And hey; sometimes you’ll clean a bathroom. This requires that you can lift a case of wine (40+ pounds) and stand for long periods of time. We do require that you are current on your COVID-19 vaccine to join the team. (We are very COVID careful around here.) Age 21+, OLCC and Food Handler’s permits within 14 days of hire.
30-35 hours per week
$150/ month health insurance stipend
IRA retirement plan available
Typically, about 5 additional hours per week, often those hours are on virtual events and can be worked from anywhere with internet access.
