Job Description:

Job Summary
The Enologist/Lab Tech supports the winemaking staff and winemaking activities in the winery in a technical capacity to ensure wine quality aspects are met. The position investigates and conducts trials that resolve issues and advance wine quality. In addition, the Enologist/Lab Tech ensures that routine chemistry is conducted and reviewed in a timely fashion. Job title will be based on experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Performs Analysis:
•  Competent in all laboratory analyses and understands the accuracy parameters of the instruments and analysis. Assists in training lab techs on new analyses. Assists in evaluation of new analytical methods for introduction to the lab or for instrument purchase.

2. Winemaking Decisions:
•  Tastes wine inventory with Winemaking staff to build familiarity with wine style and wine quality issues. Acts as a technical resource regarding treatments that would reduce wine quality issues or advance wine style.
•  Prepares blends or trials as agreed upon with Winemaking staff, following with tasting and cellar implementation of results.
•  Works with Winemaking staff to ensure that monthly samples are promptly set up, tasted and analyzed.
•  Participates in blending trials with winemaker.

3. Reviews Lab Analysis:
•  Regularly reviews lab analyses of wine inventory for anomalies or missing information and conducts follow up analysis or broad-based analysis on barrel lots.
•  Adjusts tank SO2 targets based on routine analysis.
•  Ensures that bottling blend analysis matches bottled wine analysis. Captures details of bottling blends for reference on future blends or future vintages.

4. Reporting and Work Order Generation
•  Collects data and completes Annual Waste Discharge Reports for processed winery process waste water.
•  Collects data and completes Monthly and Annual Storm water Reporting.
•  Ensures that bottling blend analysis matches bottled wine analysis. Captures details of bottling blends for reference on future blends or future vintages.
•  Assist winemaker in work order generation and entry in Wine Maker’s Database.

5. Special projects and harvest support:
•  Conducts special technical projects as needed in the winery to resolve quality assurance or wine quality issues.
•  Documents Dissolved Oxygen in wine and headspace
•  Supports Winemaking staff at harvest time by assisting with tank additions, fermentation management, harvest time fining trials and special analyses and Tracks fermentations.
•  Work in the cellar when needed (~20% of job)
•  Uses the Winemaker’s Database to check history of wine movements and analyses and is proficient in analysis data entry and correction.
•  Participates in continuing education programs when available, or technical forums, which enhance job performance and technical contribution to the winery.
•  Ensures that regular analysis and evaluation of wine lots undergoing micro-ox are examined on a weekly basis.
•  Prepares clear work outlines for the Cellar Manager to use to implement desired wine work.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Other Abilities
Skills:
Works with minimal supervision given proper direction.
Strong wine chemistry and analytical skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Highly organized and able to follow through on projects.
Strong knowledge of technical resources available to the wine industry.

Knowledge:
Working knowledge of MS Excel, Outlook and Word software applications.
Working knowledge of wine records database program such as Winemaker’s Database.

Education & Experience
Minimum of 1-3 years related experience, preferably in a winery.
BS degree in Enology, Fermentation Science or equivalent preferred, but not required.

Physical Requirements
Ability to lift heavy boxes (40-50 lbs), going up and down stairs and ladders, bending, standing and walking. Ability to work long hours during when needed during bottling and harvest.
