The Assistant Controller role affords the ideal candidate the opportunity to operate in a leadership role at one of the most prestigious and beautiful wine estates in the Napa Valley. This individual will bring his/her professional financial skills, leadership, and initiative to continue to grow the expertise of the finance and accounting functions. This is a role for an individual with strong communication skills who is comfortable in a hands-on role. He/she can operate both strategically and tactically and thrives in a small, highly collaborative environment. The corporate culture is one where finance leaders are valued for their contribution in building culture and team unity as well as managing the financial side of the business.

This position is part of a four-person Finance and Operations team reporting directly to the CFO. The Assistant Controller will interact with all departments within the Company.

The chosen candidate will operate in a wine business that represents the best of both worlds. The winery is family owned by a family with a sophistication and understanding of the wine business, dedicated to quality and excellence. The business is professionally led and well capitalized. It is a business that is managed with rigor and an eye on control of spending. This role clearly necessitates ability to execute proper business planning and deliver sound analysis and advice. The Assistant Controller will work closely with the CFO to support and achieve the goals of the business. A level of excellence is expected in every aspect of the activity.


The Assistant Controller will serve in a leadership role and provide management and coordination of company financial planning and budget management functions, ensuring company accounting procedures and reporting conform to generally accepted accounting principles.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

•  Oversee daily functions of finance and accounting including:
o Bank reconciliation and Cash management
o Accounts payables and Accounts receivable
o Inventory management and Costing
o Fixed assets
o Payroll Processing
•  Post, process, and reconcile all financial transactions
•  Ensure the quality and continuity of operations (inventory, warehousing) and client-facing processes (DTC platform, invoicing and fulfilling processes for retail and wholesale channels)
•  Collaborate with Estate Director to develop yearly budgets and reforecasts
•  Deliver timely, accurate, and effective analysis and reporting of financials while monitoring operating results against budget
•  Ensure compliance with local, state and federal tax requirements. Including but not limited to; sales & use tax, excise tax, winegrowers, and annual/quarterly surveys
•  Support third-party IT company with all Information and Technology related services
•  Maintain continuous lines of communication, keeping the CFO informed of all critical issues
•  Maintain an appropriate system of policies, internal controls, accounting standards, and procedures to safeguard assets
•  Contribute to and continue to build collaborative culture

The successful candidate will have wine company financial and operations experience as a disciplined, entrepreneurial and commercially oriented financial leader. Candidates will be evaluated on their track record in increasingly responsible leadership positions and operational knowledge. Critical skills and experience include:

•  Proven track record with management experience in all areas of financial reporting, accounting and administration
•  3-5 years’ experience in a mid to senior level finance or accounting position, a CPA designation preferred
•  Ideally wine industry experience with understanding of working in a boutique winery environment
•  Understanding and hands-on capabilities in accounting, financial controls, cash management, financial planning, budgeting, reporting, analysis and resolution, financial information systems, risk management, licensing, contract negotiations and legal compliance
•  Knowledge with federal and state financial regulations
•  Experience in auditing, business planning, financial and revenue modeling; analyzing and assessing business opportunities with hands-on ability to prepare financial reports, statements and projections
•  Ability to lead or personally handle day-to-day accounting processes and month-end and year-end closes
•  Demonstrated ability to work successfully with small dynamic team in an environment of innovation
•  Proficiency in financial and accounting software; preferable with Business Central, Power BI
•  Proven communicator with very strong presentation and written skills and a style promoting personal interaction and dialogue
•  Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships throughout an organization, and proven comfort and success effectively interfacing with management and staff
