SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:
The Director of Wine Production is an essential role that will lead and mentor our cellar crew as we craft our own amazing wines and those of our 20+ prestigious custom crush clients spread over two properties. This position will organize and oversee all day to day cellar duties, working alongside the Production Manager, Cellar Master, Lab Manager, and cellar team throughout the year. Attention to detail, ability to prioritize, and conscientiousness are a must!
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Manage day-to-day operations of a very fast-paced winery environment working at the Brasswood wineries. Act as a liaison between custom client winemakers and cellar team
by organizing and strategizing work load via vintrace.
• Schedule, supervise, train, review, and mentor our lab and cellar team and harvest crew.
• Write, execute and manage work orders in collaboration with Production Manager and Lab Manager, ensuring the details are fully understood by the team. Responsible for
making sure that all cellar procedures and controls are scrupulously followed.
• Review lab schedule and data to update client winemakers.
• Create and implement harvest plan collaborating with winemakers, cellar, lab and winery billing to ensure all tonnage is accounted for and seamlessly scheduled for processing
from crush pad to tank to barrel.
• Schedule and execute bottlings for various clients throughout the year.
• Manage inventory and collaborate on the preventative maintenance of all equipment and materials. Collaborate with Cellar Master to create/calendar a monthly maintenance
schedule; reviews with Production Manager and updates progress or issues daily or weekly as requested.
• Collaborate with our Cellar Master on our winery safety program, including creating/maintaining all safety procedures and ensuring that the crew upholds all safety measures in
the cellar.
• Write, revise, and update Cellar Standard Operating Procedures that effectively and efficiently accomplish winery quality goals. Identifies researches,communicates, and
implements process improvement opportunities for operational efficiencies and wine quality optimization.
• Write, revise, and update yearly Harvest Manual and training plan. Collaborates on the training of all new staff members.
• Maintaining the highest standard of cellar hygiene and organization in a showcase winemaking facility is paramount.
• Understand the workings of and can troubleshoot solutions to problems with all Winery equipment and systems.
• Other duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
• 10+ years of cellar experience at ultra-premium winery or custom crush facility.
• Minimum of five years of experience managing winery teams.
• Positive and team-focused attitude.
• Ability to plan and execute cellar workflow and long-term goals.
• Familiarity with Vintrace and VinWizard software is required.
• Excellent management skills of small and larger teams.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to train personnel in all winemaking procedures.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The employee frequently is required to sit, stand, and walk for long periods. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift wine cases and objects up to 50 pounds. Employee must be able to work in small confined spaces and high places. Demonstrated ability to work extended hours, including 6-7 days per week, especially during harvest. Demonstrated ability to work on feet for extended hours, in a cellar environment.
