The Viticulture and Enology Director is a full-time, 12-month position that is responsible for all aspects of the educational program, vineyard and winery operations to ensure education and production meet industry demands. This position is classified as non-teaching. The Director will have regular interaction with the Business Office at YC to ensure that the Southwest Wine Center is being run in a fiscally responsible manner and maintaining compliance with all state and federal regulations. The Director will work the YC Marketing Department to promote the Viticulture & Enology program & Southwest Wine Center. The Director is responsible for a high level of engagement with industry partners, community members, VEN staff, instructors, Friends of the Southwest Wine Center Foundation Auxiliary members, volunteers and College Leadership.
Typical job duties for this position:
• Work with the target community and Advisory Committee to develop and meet education needs. Be the face of the program to the college community and the target community.
• General Manager for the Southwest Wine Center business auxiliary. Monitors the financial health of the business operations, including fruit contracting, retail/wholesale wine sales, employee management, operational policy formation, promotion, and liquor reporting and compliance.
• Direct, manage and oversee all winemaking functions
• Oversight on vineyard operations throughout the calendar year; maintaining a living laboratory for educational and commercial purposes.
• Responsible for the viticulture and enology academic and SWC auxiliary budgets.
• Develops marketing and collateral for the Southwest Wine Center including, website, bottle labels, printed materials, and digital images.
• Maintain all winery compliance records required at the local, state and federal levels.
• Develops non-credit opportunities in Viticulture, Enology, and Craft Distilling.
• Coordinate volunteers for academic and auxiliary support.
• Purchase and maintain equipment and supplies for instructional and auxiliary needs.
• Oversee internship opportunities available for students in the discipline area.
• Working with the Dean, recruit, hire, credential, observe, lead and support adjunct teaching team with courses, syllabi, Canvas, Quality Matters, OER, new adjunct needs, first point of contact for the program needs, help teaching team be successful.
• Coordinate and complete program review.
• Initiate and complete curriculum changes and create new courses to align with the changing academic landscape.
• Attend and represent YC at relevant external meetings.
• Stay current on academic and professional changes in discipline area through professional growth.
• Advisor for the viticulture and enology student organization (Grand Crew.)
• Work with supervising dean and scheduler to schedule, monitor, and adjust program course schedule each semester to provide year-round, every 8wk course starts.
• Serve on appropriate Participatory Governance/Committees
• Recruit students into the program by attending open houses, trade shows, creating marketing material like videos/flyers/press releases, advertising through noncredit workshops/kid for college, maintain social media sites, newsletter sand group emails, creating innovative ideas like the Earn While You Learn program.
• Serve as a liaison/consultant for workforce development and training needs.
• Support students in the program with items like orientations, phone calls, emails, notifications of other classes to take, etc.
• Attend college-sponsored functions (i.e., Welcome Back Luncheons, Holiday Luncheons, Forums, etc.)
• Other duties as assigned.
Additional information
Directors are 12-month exempt employees and are expected to be working during regular business hours, unless on approved leave or with permission from direct supervisor and or management for an alternative schedule to accommodate evenings, weekend and off campus obligations.
Minimum Expectations & Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in related field required. Industry experience may substitute for education at the discretion of the college.
• Experience in the wine industry is required.
Preferred Skills & Abilities
• Master’s degree in related field.
• Ten years of wine industry experience
• College level instructional experience
• Business management experience
Essential Functions
• Frequently sits, stands, and walks. Occasionally twists/turns, bends, kneels, reaches overhead, and climbs.
• Able to work at various heights, on ladders
• Operate forklift (obtain forklift certification within first 60 days)
• Must perform physically strenuous tasks including lifting heavy objects (50+ lbs).
