Position Overview
We are seeking a passionate, knowledgeable, and customer-focused Assistant Manager to join our boutique wine shop team. Located in a vibrant seasonal community, our store caters to both visiting tourists and discerning collectors, with a particular focus on Champagne, Burgundy, and natural wines from small, artisanal producers. Reporting directly to and working closely with the General Manager/Wine Buyer, this is a unique opportunity to contribute to a high-end wine retail experience and share your love of wine with our diverse clientele.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service & Sales
Provide exceptional customer service, guiding customers in their wine selections with expertise and enthusiasm.
Develop relationships with collectors, regular patrons, and seasonal visitors to build loyalty.
Conduct wine tastings and educate customers about specific producers, regions, and styles, particularly in Champagne, Burgundy, and natural wines.
Store Operations
Assist the General Manager with day-to-day operations, including opening and closing procedures, inventory management, and maintaining store cleanliness and presentation.
Oversee merchandising and ensure shelves and displays highlight key products and producers effectively.
Ensure compliance with all local and state regulations regarding the sale of alcohol.
Events & Education
Organize and assist in hosting free wine tastings, educational classes, and special events.
Collaborate with the General Manager to curate event topics and select wines for tastings and classes.
Create a welcoming and engaging atmosphere for all events to enhance the customer experience.
Team Leadership
Support training and development of sales associates, sharing wine knowledge and fostering a team-oriented environment.
Act as a resource for staff by answering questions and providing guidance on wine-related topics.
Administrative Tasks
Assist the General Manager with maintaining accurate inventory records, including tracking high-demand and seasonal items.
Help with ordering and restocking wines, focusing on maintaining the shop’s emphasis on Champagne, Burgundy, and natural wines.
Manage point-of-sale systems, reconcile daily sales, and support financial reporting.
Qualifications
Wine Knowledge: A deep understanding and passion for wine, particularly Champagne, Burgundy, and natural wines. Formal wine education (e.g., WSET, CMS) is a plus.
Experience: 2+ years of experience in retail, hospitality, or wine sales, with a preference for boutique or specialty environments.
Customer Service: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a focus on creating memorable customer experiences.
Leadership Skills: Prior experience in a supervisory or team leadership role is preferred.
Event Planning: Experience coordinating and hosting events or tastings is an advantage.
Flexibility: Ability to work a variable schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak tourist seasons.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift and carry wine cases (up to 40 pounds) and stand for extended periods.
