Vineyard and Winery Technician

Job Description:

Working directly with our Winemaker and Vineyard Manager, this dynamic role will give you an in-depth understanding of Hirsch Vineyard's viticultural and winemaking practices, allowing you to follow the complete production cycle from vine to bottle. This position works approximately 85% in the vineyard / ranch and 15% in the winery. This role requires a meticulous, hands-on approach to vineyard and cellar work, ensuring that all processes are executed at the highest level of precision and care. This is a full-time, hourly non-exempt position with benefits located in Cazadero, CA.

Hirsch Vineyards is a family owned and operated estate winery and vineyard located on the West Sonoma Coast. Farmed biodynamically since 2011, we produce site-specific Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Key responsibilities - vineyard and ranch
•  Monitor and collect vineyard data, such as phenology data, crop estimates, pest and disease scouting, vine health, maturity sampling, etc.
•  Work with Vineyard Manager to generate and distribute weekly farming report
•  Maintain viticultural records; analyze and report on vineyard data.
•  Assist Vineyard Manager with tracking and reporting labor hours.
•  Assist Vineyard Manager with irrigation program and maintenance.
•  Drone operation for vineyard surveying.
•  Plant and soil sampling.
•  Occasionally perform farming activities including but not limited to pruning, suckering, positioning, tucking, tying, hedging, leafing, fruit thinning, spraying, harvesting and irrigation.
•  Work with winemaking and vineyard team to design and implement viticultural experiments.
•  Support ecological and biodynamic farming practices;
•  Support olive production and other non-grape farming activities.
•  Support new vineyard development and replanting projects.
•  Assist with compliance and reporting; help implement, manage and monitor safety procedures and protocols.
•  Support equipment, infrastructure and facilities repairs and maintenance.
•  Assist with maintaining supply inventories; order supplies; pick up and/or facilitate deliveries
•  Support grape customer relations.

Key responsibilities - winery
•  Barrel management, including cleaning, organizing, maintenance, filling
•  Wine sampling, additions, stirring, and topping
•  Bottling
•  Cleaning and sanitizing
•  Forklifting
•  Record keeping (paper and electronic)
•  Fruit processing
•  Occasional fermentation management and monitoring (primary harvest responsibilities will be in the vineyard).
•  Possible other harvest duties dependent on the vintage

Requirements
•  Minimum 3 years vineyard experience.
•  Knowledge of viticulture practices and an understanding of year-round vineyard operations; familiarity with vineyard infrastructure, farming equipment and supplies
•  Experience with biodynamic and/or other ecological farming system preferred but not required; desire and aptitude to learn is sufficient.
•  Winery experience a plus but not required; desire and aptitude to learn is sufficient.
•  Strong verbal and written communication skills.
•  Strong team player.
•  Able to juggle shifting priorities and meet project deadlines.
•  Strong computer skills, including programs such as Excel, Word, email, databases, weather programs and internet.
•  Proficiency in English and Spanish.
•  Valid CA driver’s license.
•  Able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; able to walk and stand for most of the day; twist, turn, bend, crouch, extend, climb ladders, and have a full range of motion in all varieties of physical movement.
•  Able to work in all weather conditions including hot/cold temperatures, mud, dust, fog, soft soil, walk in uneven terrain, and ability to shift between indoor and outdoor work environments.
•  Able to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays, as needed; able to work at night during the harvest.
