Job Title: Assistant Winemaker – Vinifera Program

Job Overview: Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Assistant Winemaker to support and help lead the production of our premium Vinifera wine program. This position offers a hands-on role in all facets of the winemaking process, working closely with the Winemaking and Executive Team to ensure execution of the winery’s quality and signature wine style goals. The ideal candidate will be passionate about wine, technically proficient, and ready to grow within a dynamic, team-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities:
• Vinifera Production Support: Work directly on the production of vinifera wines; from fruit processing, fermentation, and aging to bottling while ensuring each lot reflects the intended character and quality.
• Cellar Collaboration: Actively participate in and help manage cellar activities including pump-overs, racking, blending, additions, barrel work, sanitation, and bottling prep.
• Fermentation & Maturation Oversight: Monitor fermentations, conduct sensory evaluations, track wine development, and execute lab trials in coordination with the Winemaking team.
• Data & Record Management: Maintain accurate winemaking records and production logs, supporting traceability, compliance, and internal reporting.
• Team Leadership: Supports the Winemaking team in training and supervising of seasonal staff. Conducts best practices and safety protocols at all times.
• Cross-Department Communication: Serve as a liaison between production, winemaking, and executive staff while ensuring timelines, quality standards, and production goals are met.
• Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain winery equipment including presses, pumps, filters, and tanks with care and efficiency.
Qualifications:
• 5+ years of professional winery experience with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory cellar role
• Strong knowledge of vinifera varietals, fermentation science, and cellar practices
• Experience with barrel aging, wine movement, and wine stabilization techniques
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently
• Familiarity with winery safety standards and equipment maintenance
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs and work in a physically demanding environment
• Forklift certification (or willingness to obtain)
• Degree in Enology, Viticulture, or related field preferred but not required
