At Fetzer Vineyards, our grapes aren’t the only thing growing.
And that’s why we’re looking for a Manager – Grower Relations, Interior Valley & Central Coast to source quality fruit for Fetzer, Little Black Dress, Jekel, Five Rivers, and Sanctuary Brands. You will secure quality grapes and manage relationships with current and potential wine grape suppliers; provide intelligence and guidance on market conditions and wine grape supply to senior decision-makers; and develop an in-depth understanding of viticultural nuances of the assigned grape regions.
Ideal candidate will work virtually and be located within the Central Valley or elsewhere with the Interior Valley region.
Interior Valley (IV) & Central Coast (CC) Winegrower Relations Manager – 60%
•Develop good business and professional relationships with contracted winegrowers and develop relationships with potential growers.
•Initiate and advance negotiations under guidelines set by the Grower Relations Director. Support the Grower Relations Director and the Grower Relations Administrator in the production, delivery, and management of contracts, written grower communications, and accounting documents.
•Develop an in-depth understanding of the viticultural nuances of the IV & CC regions, including aspects of climate and soil and a knowledge of winegrower reputation, affiliations, and attitude. Stay educated on the latest viticultural techniques and developments.
•Promote improved wine grape quality through frequent vineyard visits and knowledge sharing. Monitor and document grower practices and grapevine phenology and advise growers on best winegrowing practices.
•Continually evaluate vineyards for conditions such as rot, mildew, presence of insect pests, disease, vine collapse, and vineyard and vine appearance. Collect pesticide use reports from growers prior to harvest.
•Provide information on wine grape market conditions to senior managers as requested, including information on pricing trends, planting activity, and competitor activity.
•Manage and/or support the annual grower wine tastings, and other grower educational events.
•Represent Fetzer at winegrower events, seminars, tastings, and meetings.
Harvest Management – 20%
•Work with staff to plan and execute harvest logistics to ensure timely delivery of grapes of the proper quality and quantity. Take sugar samples and monitor grape maturity, provide information and feedback to winemakers, Grower Relations Administration and growers. Hire and supervise seasonal sugar samplers.
•Support winemaking staff in scheduling of harvest for contract growers; provide timely block ripeness and condition assessments; supervision of season harvest staff. Manage grower contractual obligations, such as contract maximum tons, quality assessments, delivery requirements, etc. Periodic site visits with winemaking team to ensure that quality and harvest parameters are met.
•Coordinate and communicate harvest schedule.
Crop Estimation – 15%
•Collect field data necessary to estimate annual and future yields in all IV & CC contracted and owned blocks; develop block yield estimates and provide data to Contract Administration, Vineyard Managers, and others. Manage a database of past estimates and actual, and component data. Collect cluster counts and weights at key growth stages.
Vineyard Research – 5%
•Develop, manage, and evaluate viticultural research trials in IV & CC vineyards. Present/report trial outcomes to winemaking and key management.
•Monitor and analyze climate and weather conditions and provide an annual weather summary and intermediate reports as requested.
•BS degree in Viticulture, Enology, Plant Science, or related field plus minimum 5 years prior viticulture or vineyard management experience or equivalent education/experience combination. Recent or upcoming BS or MS graduates, with significant internship or Harvest experience, encouraged to apply. The position may be altered based upon experience.
•Excellent knowledge of viticulture and a general knowledge of winemaking practices and cycles.
•A Valid CA Driver’s License – this position will require local travel in the Interior Valley and Central Coast regions.
•Wine tasting skills.

•Develop relationships with all levels of internal and external contacts.
•Effective negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
•Excellent communication skills. Ability to present to a group of people.
•Highly skilled in Microsoft word processing and data management products, email, use of the Internet.
•Safely operate ATV through various vineyard conditions.
Ability to lift and carry 40lbs; ability to drive motor vehicle long distances and travel extensively within the assigned region; ability to work in all weather conditions including hot/cold weather temperatures, mud, dust, soft soil, uneven terrain.
Position works virtually out of one’s home office, ideally located within the Central Valley or elsewhere with the surrounding Interior Valley region.
Fetzer Vineyards’ corporate office is located at 12901 Old River Rd Hopland, CA 95449. Our multi-site California winery operation includes 1000 acres of farmed vineyards and 3 million cases produced annually. Operations include Mendocino County winery, production and vineyard locations; Paso Robles winery and Jekel vineyard operation in Greenfield, with a combined sales of approximately $185 Million and combined employment of 315 with an additional approximately 40 seasonally.
