POSITION: ENOLOGY LABORATORY MANAGER
DEPARTMENT: LAB
REPORTS TO: WINEMAKER
CLASSIFICATION: EXEMPT
SALARY RANGE: $73,000 - $120,000

POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Laboratory Manager to oversee our laboratory operations, manage employees, and ensure the optimal functioning of all analytical equipment. The ideal candidate will not only have strong leadership abilities but also possess a strong background in analytical chemistry, experience in method development and validation, and proficiency in Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy (GC/MS) instrumentation and techniques.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Laboratory Operations Management-
•  Design, optimize, and validate analytical methods for the analysis of various compounds found in wine.
•  Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and guidelines.
•  Manage laboratory inventory, including chemicals, reagents, and supplies.
•  Coordinate equipment maintenance, repairs, and calibration schedules.
•  Oversee waste disposal and hazardous materials handling procedures.
•  Optimize laboratory workflows to maximize efficiency and productivity.
•  Assures accuracy, precision, and reliability of analytical results -all performed in a timely manner.
•  Communicates performance obstacles to Winemaking and/or maintenance and identify infrastructure and technological needs as appropriate.
Analytical Equipment Oversight-
•  Maintain and troubleshoot a variety of analytical instruments, including spectrophotometers, chromatographs, and mass spectrometers.
•  Ensure the proper functioning and calibration of equipment to produce accurate and reliable results.
•  Evaluate new technologies and equipment upgrades to enhance laboratory capabilities.
•  Collaborate with vendors and service providers to procure necessary equipment and services.
•  Train laboratory staff on equipment operation, maintenance, and safety protocols.

Employee Management-
•  Help recruit, train, and supervise laboratory staff, including technicians and harvest interns.
•  Provide mentorship, coaching, and performance feedback to team members.
•  Schedule staff assignments and manage workloads to meet project deadlines.
•  Foster a safe, positive, and collaborative work environment conducive to professional growth and development.
•  Address employee concerns, conflicts, and disciplinary issues as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:
•  Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry or similar) required; master’s degree preferred. Minimum of 5 years of experience in laboratory management, with demonstrated leadership skills. Winery Lab experience preferred.
•  Proficiency in analytical techniques and instrumentation, with hands-on experience in equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
•  Hands-on analytical laboratory experience -e.g., wet chemistry and chromatography.
•  Experience in method development and optimization for chromatographic analysis.
•  Experience with Agilent chromatography products including Gas chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) preferred.
•  Experience with Agilent software platforms related to GC-MS preferred.
•  Strong understanding of laboratory safety protocols, regulatory requirements, and quality assurance practices.
•  Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team-building skills.
•  Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and adapt to changing priorities.
•  Proficiency in MS Office and able to interpret scientific data.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
•  Must be able to stand for extended periods and move around the laboratory environment.
•  Capable of lifting and carrying equipment and supplies weighing up to 45 pounds.
•  Manual dexterity and fine motor skills for handling small instruments, samples, and laboratory equipment.
•  Comfortable wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), including lab coats, gloves, and safety glasses as necessary.
•  Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, or extended hours to meet project deadlines or for production support during the harvest season.
