Experienced Winemaker - Virginia

Job Description:

Established VA winery is hiring for position of lead winemaker who also has viticultural experience. This is a hands-on position.

This position will manage cellar operations and winemaking. Responsibilities include hands on winemaking including crush and bottling, managing inventory from grape to bottle, maintaining records and cleanliness in the cellar, and assisting with grape and bulk wines sales, etc. Experience with both practical and technical aspects of winemaking process and understanding of regulatory requirements is required.

Skilled sensory evaluation, ability to identify wine quality and faults is required.

Physical demands include ability to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs up to 30 feet above ground, stoop kneel, etc. Lifting hoses, moving cases of wines and other objects is required. Applicant must be able to smell and taste wines and hear clearly. Forklift operation is a required skill.

Understanding of vineyard operations, working in tandem with vineyard lead on growing and harvest decisions, and ability to make educated decisions on harvest pick dates is required.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and wine management systems for tracking and production purposes is required. Must have strong organizational skills, record keeping skills, and accuracy with numbers.

Participating in sales opportunities and public events to represent the wines and brand is required and will be secondary to winemaking. Excellent written and communication skills is a must as is the willingness to work as a team player with colleagues and sales team.

****Applicants must reside in United States and have at least 5 years of experience making wine on the east coast, preferably in Virginia. English speaking is a must and Spanish speaking ability is preferred. A Bachelors in enology / viticulture or proven and successful record of experience equivalate is required. *****

Harvest and crush hours and days will be based on harvest demands. Outside of that time of year, the typical work week will be Monday - Friday with great flexibility offered.
