Patz & Hall Wine Co.

Sonoma, CA

Job Description:

Patz & Hall Winery is embarking on an exciting journey, and we're seeking passionate individuals to join our Vineyard Harvest Internship program. Founded in 1988 by four friends, Patz & Hall has become synonymous with exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot noir production in California. With Winemaker James Hall leading the charge for past 35 vintages, we've cultivated enduring partnerships with some of California's most esteemed vineyards, producing wines of unparalleled quality. As of this year, the winery is once again privately owned and operated by James Hall, marking a return to our roots as a family-run establishment.

About the Role:

As a Harvest Vineyard Intern at Patz & Hall, you'll play an integral role in shaping the 2024 Vintage. This dynamic position offers a diverse range of tasks and responsibilities, ensuring a hands-on learning experience that goes beyond the ordinary. While primarily focused on viticulture operations during harvest, this role will transition to assisting the cellar team towards the end of harvest, providing valuable exposure to all facets of winemaking.

Responsibilities:

Vineyard-
•  Conduct vineyard assessments, including cluster counts and weights, to accurately estimate grape yields and inform harvest planning.
•  Collaborate with our director of grower relations to scout vineyards for pest and disease pressures, ensuring proactive measures are taken to safeguard grape quality.
•  Support the winemaking team by providing real-time vineyard data and observations, contributing to decision-making processes during harvest.

Cellar-
•  Prepare the cellar for harvest activities, ensuring equipment and facilities are optimized for incoming fruit.
•  Coordinate the receival of fruit, utilizing forklift operations and managing crush area logistics.
•  Operate grape presses, managing multiple presses simultaneously as needed.
•  Execute maceration regimes as directed by the winemaker, providing feedback on fermentation management and monitoring Pinot noir fermentations.
•  Conduct native and barrel fermentations in Chardonnay, overseeing and managing fermentation processes.
•  Perform draining and pressing activities, contributing to the production process from grape to bottle.
•  Engage in ongoing learning about wines from around the world, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
•  Embrace the joy of music, sharing and enjoying great tunes with fellow team members.

Qualifications:
•  A strong work ethic and a commitment to craftsmanship excellence.
•  Nimbleness, regimented organization, and the ability to sequence tasks effectively.
•  Willingness to adapt and learn in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
•  Ability to work outside in cold and hot conditions.
•  Must have a valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
•  Ability to work extended hours.
•  Availability to start in early July, with a commitment until late October/early November.

At Patz & Hall, we believe that every harvest brings new challenges and opportunities for growth. We encourage our team members to approach each day with a growth mindset and a beginner's curiosity, knowing that the lessons learned here will resonate throughout their professional journey.

If you're ready to roll up your sleeves and immerse yourself in the artistry of winemaking, we invite you to join us on this exhilarating adventure as a Harvest Vineyard Intern at Patz & Hall Winery.
