Job Description:

Schug Winery in Sonoma is looking for a passionate and driven intern to join our small production team for the upcoming harvest. We are a privately owned winery established in 1980 and dedicated to producing wines of the highest quality in the European style. This position is hands-on in all aspects of winemaking and offers the ability to work close with our small, enthusiastic team and in a diverse set of winemaking techniques.

Schug, which produces 30,000 cases sold across the U.S. and on four continents, focuses on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from its Carneros estate as well as partner vineyards elsewhere in the Sonoma Coast and Petaluma Gap. The winery also produces Bordeaux varieties sourced from premiere Sonoma County sites.
The internship will be for approx. 3 months from early August until the end of October, with the possibility of extension, depending on harvest needs, and will include good overtime potential (early mornings, evenings, and weekends). This internship offers experiences in all aspects of winemaking and daily tasks include vineyard sampling and monitoring, receiving and processing of fruit, inoculations and additions, monitoring fermentations, performing lab analysis, barrel work and blending of the previous vintage wines.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
•  Fruit maturity sampling and analysis
•  Forklift operation
•  Reception and processing of grapes
•  Cleaning and sanitizing tanks and winery equipment
•  Performing yeast inoculation and additions
•  Performing punch-downs and pump-overs
•  Monitoring fermentations
•  Transferring and racking of juice from tank to tank and tank to barrel
•  Barrel work with finished wines and incoming juice, including stacking
•  Assist in maintenance of cellar equipment in good working order
•  Understand and adhere to all safety policies and procedures

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:
•  Be a team player and a key member with passion and a positive and fun attitude
•  Keen attention to detail with a sense of urgency
•  One year or more previous harvest experience preferred, but not required
•  Must have a valid Driver’s License
•  Ability to work long hours (10+ hour shifts 6 days per week) as needed dependent upon production needs
•  Ability to work within a dynamic and fast changing environment
•  Ability to stand for long periods of time, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs/ladders, kneel, lift or move weights up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
•  Perform work duties in various weather conditions indoors or outdoors
