Tonnellerie Vicard Celebrates its 95th Anniversary, Releases the Exception Barrel

Posted on February 03, 2020

Napa, Calif.—To celebrate its 95th anniversary, Tonnellerie Vicard revives the tradition of its history and launches a limited series 100% Troncais oak barrel named Exception.

This rare and limited batch of 250 barrels of 225 liters was designed in honor of Paul Vicard, grandfather of Jean-Charles Vicard and founder of the cooperage in 1925. Specializing in the creation of homogeneous and reproducible products, Vicard thus created "the exception that proves the rule" by launching this 100% Prestigious Forest limited series.

Back in 2014, for this barrel, Jean-Charles Vicard (CEO) and Frederic Desamais (Vicard’s buyer) have therefore chosen amongst their Hautes Futaies supplies an exceptional lot from the Tronçais forest (Allier, France). Staves from this prestigious wood were selected as close as possible to the heart of the tree and air dried during 60-month in an exclusively dedicated area of Vicard’s 8-hectare wood park.

To give it a timeless yet elegant appearance, the Exception barrel possesses eight galvanized black hoops.

About Vicard: The Vicard Group is led by Jean-Charles Vicard; sixth generation cooper and the grandson of Paul Vicard, who began making barrels in a small workshop in Cognac in 1925.  Tonnellerie Vicard’s “official” Cooperage was founded in 1968, by Jean Vicard (Paul’s son) and under Jean’s guidance, purchased their first parcel of land in 1970.  The group has continued to grow and evolve for the past 50 years.  Still family owned and operated, Tonnellerie Vicard remains 100% vertically integrated; from personally selecting wood for their barrels to their state-of-the-art cooperage in Cognac which includes a 20 acres wood yard and tank facility. This family owned hands-on approach ensures superb quality for each barrel produced. Tonnellerie Vicard, exported to the United States since 1985 is now sold in 45 countries worldwide.
